PHUKET: -- The British Embassy will be hosting a seminar on sensitively handling sexual assault victims in Phuket on February 25.

“The British Embassy and Royal Thai Police are going to host the seminar, titled ‘Victim Handling Protocols when Dealing with Rape and Sexual Assault Cases’,” said Martin Carpenter, British honorary consul for Phuket.

The employees of the Phuket Public Health Department and government hospitals will be invited to the event.

“Victims of rape or sexual assault go through a medical examination at the hospitals, and it is felt that the seminar will be very useful for doctors, hospital representatives, representatives from the health department and psychiatrists," Mr Carpenter said.

Sounds like there are quite a few rapes / sexual assaults on Phuket, with not many being reported to police, and therefore, the media.

If the British Embassy staff are involved in this Seminar, I wonder what fee they are charging for their advisory services?. If it's free, it'll likely be a waste of UK taxpayers money, as the Thai authorities already have the 'right' people doing the 'right' things according to the 'right' textbooks.

And who at the British Embassy is an expert on such matters? The British police are under fire again at the moment for their insensitive handling of sexual assault victims. Perhaps the British Embassy's expert could return to the UK and conduct a few seminars there?

Unless of course they're going to talk prevention as well. Avoid bi-kinis, cover up well etc

Well Done at last Brit. Emb.

Its not all true what they say about you.

I hope you can show some backing from Ministers back in the UK and actually get your hands on some cash to do something positive...... even if that just means bigger brown envelopes. At least you could have them printed with a set of instructions/guidance for handling rape victims and have a rape kit packed inside with the dosh. Then you could be sure it was opened.

You never know it might catch on and spread to assault victims who did not bring it upon themselves in Pattaya bars. .............So not much to spend their then, airmail quality will do it.

Better to hold this in 'sharia zones in the UK, in Amsterdam, various cities in Germany, and Stockholm. Phuket? Not so much of a problem. Sounds like a good reason for the embassy staff to take a field trip to sin-city.

Are you kidding? you can't walk for 5 mins in Pattaya without tripping over Brit Consulate staff discussing "counsulating" options with ladies (and lawyers) of dubious origin..............................allegedly
