Dengue, new policy on Mosquito.

I received a note today from, and then had a chat with our Village Manager ... she is very good so I 100% believe what she told me ... She has been told that Pakkret Health Authority are following country wide advice on spraying.

Apparently the mozzies will get resistant to the chemical sprayed, so they will only spray around a 100M area where someone has contacted Dangue Fever! Probably a little lost in translation but I get the gist. Anyone heard of this policy or could ask about it. I await confirmation from the Village Committee its self on this policy.

NOW ... we also have a disused swimming pool, which has water in ... an idea had been put forward to put fish in the water to eat any 'pre-mozzies' ... would any fish do or can someone recommend a type ... thanks.

PS this is not a pisstake, it's for real!

You need the guppies, collect some from us on Sunday smile.png

You only need a few, same was done in New Orleans after the flooding.

An off topic, spelling Nazi post has been removed.

Spelling corrected.

If the swimming pool is disused and has water in it, I guess the water must be stagnant and filthy by now. The first thing is you need to drain the water and clean the pool otherwise no fish will survive in that.

Once you have cleaned the pool and created a suitable environment for the fish, gravel and sand at the bottom, pumps with filters to keep the water clean and stop it from stagnating, then any top feeder fish will do the job. Carp are probably best, because they are hardy and can tolerate more extremes in water temperatures and maybe add a couple of catfish that will scavenge the muck off the bottom and help keep the algae down. Even if you decide to add guppies, they still require clean flowing water and a good environment. If you feel that`s too much bother then maybe best to fill the pool in or place canvas sheeting over it to stop anymore water getting in,

Unfortunately the pool doesn't belong to the Village ... it used to be lovely to sit around in the evening with a Chang ... but the owner let it go (I believe that there is an ongoing court case over it so can't say more) ... it's now a mess and a breading ground for whatever. Fortunately it's hidden away so is not an eye sore. I do see that someone has put some fish in it. It is not a small pool! I suppose that 'someone' could use the water for the gardens and if anyone asks what happened to the water, guess could say ... suns been a bit hot lately ....

As already suggested some larvae eating fish or longer term solution is the best. But an immediate fix to the disused pool is a cup full of diesel. Looks ugly but mosquito's can't breed in that stagnant water anymore, until the diesel has evaporated.

Thanks, I'll suggest that ...but it's a big pool so maybe a couple of gallons is more like it.

No, even a cup full might be overdoing it. Just enough to form a film over the top so that the larvae are starved of oxygen

That's the main effect of "fogging" like you see resorts, temples etc. Sometimes the fogging liquid can include pesticides but mostly it's about distributing a thin film of diesel on every droplet of water.

And it doesn't require permission surreptitiously to chuck a bag full in to the pool.

Isn't there some kind of tablet or pellet can throw in the water to kill the larvae?

I heard that too has anyone any idea where to get it because my neighbor seems to like his stagnant water for his plants in one of those big clay pots. Id love to drop a pellet in there.

It's a course powder, we have it in the bowls under plantpots. It is for ponds or small fountains...just ask those shops who sell gardeners chemicals, kanchana phisek has plenty of them. It doesn't kill fish as well if i remember well.

Strange that nobody here knows the thai word for it or that it even exists. They must live in condo's i guess.

Um ... Think it might need quite a few ... I'll probably go for the 'bucket full of Diesel' ... as well ...

If you don't use that pool then renovate it and sell the whole house with profit...

Diesel will stink man, the government gives that mosquito-pills for free but hey it's up to you....

If you're going to put the diesel on the pool the fish won't last the night.

You only need a few, the Thais don't call them "1000 fish" for nothing, they breed like, er, small fish smile.png
