I am going to Savakkanet next week for marriage visa, my questions are-

I know where I can park my motorbike at the bridge, I believe you are not allowed to cross the bridge on foot.

Does the bus stop before the bridge where my motorbike is parked to pick up passengers?

Can I use Thai Baht to pay for hotel and local shops, or should I convert my Thai money before crossing the bridge?

Answers appreciated.

The bus stops just after the "check-out" from Thailand, I think it was 50 THB for the bus,and YES you are not allowed to cross on foot.

Hotels etc you can pay in Thai Baht, they will give you change in KIP

That's fine thanks, I know you get the bus at Mukdahan bus station, but I want to leave my motorbike at the secure place

beside the bridge, which is no problem.

Will the bus stop there and pick me up, I need to be sure about this, I mean This is Thailand.

The Thai immigration is by the bridge, so you wont need to get a bus if you park next to the bridge

The bus is to take you over the bridge.

I meant that he wouldnt have to take a bus from the bridge to the immigration border control

It seems that the question is about the "shuttle bus" that drives over the bridge.

If you have some dollars, you can save a few hundred baht. When theLao boys are trying to ask for an andditional fee of 50, or 100 baht, just ignore them..

If your missus is traveling with you, please don't forget that she has to be stamped out of Thailand, before leaving. Happened to me when we found a van driver willing to drive us, but she "forgot" to "sign out."

You might be lucky and get a ride in one of the thousand vans that cross the bridge day by day. Don't forget the good tasting Sao Sao Sot and the good Lao beer.

Considering the just recently sky rocketing buri prices in Thailand, visit the duty free shop and buy some ciggies.

If you want some decent food, there's a restaurant with a big penguin in front, not far away from the old consulate

And please be aware that the motorcycle taxi guys seem to rip all people off who climb into their vehicle. It can easily become a 1,500 round trip.

If you have problems with the phone reception, you'll get an ok signal at the Mekhong river.

Good trip.

P.S. There seem to be ways to get it in one day:

1. If you have a medical condition, a letter from a doctor and you'll get your visa on the same day.

2. Just recently a friend of mine made the trip and saw a few "agents" who seem to have the right connections to get it done on the same day. + 3,000 baht.

3. Pssst.

Yeh, DO NOT get in the rides to take you across, it's a rip off....Get the bus...

I was there early this month

Yep take the bus, or if its there, the casino van will take you (savannavegas van) for 50 baht

You can't walk across, we asked

You park up, walk towards the crossing, on your left is a place to buy your bus ticket, walk on to exit Thailand's immigration control, walk on and wait for the bus..Go early, one time l waited over an hour for the bus...The other end go to Lao visa kiosk, fill in forms, pay $35 or 1500bht....They take bht in Lao..

Thanks Trans.
