Clarification for an Australian to Teach

Featured Replies

Hi everyone would like some insight from an Australian Teaching in Thailand if possible on whether i would be considered for a position teaching English in Bangkok before i dive in and pursue a career change.

I have completed a TAFE Diploma in Information Technology and have no prior experience as a teacher. I am looking into TESL courses but do not want to commit unless of course i can even be looked at after completing this. So my question i guess is my Diploma and not a university degree enough to satisfy the requirement or is this set in stone. I have read various post with different answers about no degree/only a TEFL but doesnt seem to be wise an apparaently against thai law.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Well, lately the Thai Teachers Council are more strict and you need a proper university degree. The key is what type of school. govt, require all the ps and qs.. privates they would not look at you.. then of course, you need to have the proper degree in TEFL TESOL, TEIF and TENOR. That is the fun all this..

Best.. stay home get your proper degree in TEFL or TESL, gain your experience in your classes and preparation then come on down and join the fun.. you will be handled better.

Oh you hear, if you have a white face, your golden, but even now, that is not enough in some places.. you actually must have the background and ability to teach and to teach English.

Then of course, you could be one of the lucky ones who slip through the cracks, and does fine and you are living in P tang.

Cheers Mate

Good Luck

It will be very difficult to obtain a work permit at a formal school without a degree. You may pick up full-time work through an agency, part-time work through a language school, private students or internet teaching jobs but visa and work permit will always be a problem without a degree. Cambodia, Vietnam and China might be better choices.
