Beer promotions and bottle caps

Featured Replies

I just finished an evening with a friend at OMG and a couple of other places. My apologies for coherence problems.

At OMG my Thai friend asked a pretty young lady sitting near us why she had spent the last couple of hours counting beer bottle caps (shortly after beginning the count she ordered a bottle of Thai whiskey and a mixer to help her count). The pretty lady explained that the beer companies kept track of how well their promotions were doing by keeping track of the number of beers opened by counting the bottle caps.

I have a bit of management experience, so I recognize this as a performance measurement, known as a "metric", that is easily open to manipulation. However after working in a bureaucracy in the '80's and '90's that was obsessed with metrics, I advise against applying logic to the situation. This is the metric that a big business, with the bureaucratic inertia inherent in big businesses, will use until logic (or a new management fad) overcomes the inertia. That could take a while.

In other threads people have commented on the fact that when a beer promotion was ordered, all the beers were opened on or before delivery. Now you know why. If you want to do the obvious and game this metric to your advantage, that's up to you. I'm just posting an interesting and potentially useful bit of information.

I hope you expained this "useful bit of information" as clearly to her as you have to us. Farang Bahhhh !

Silly way of counting the beers sold that, what's to stop the pretties bringing beer caps in from elsewhere.

I can't believe I'm posting to this Chang fuelled nonsense, but very likely she just uses it for her own purposes to keep track of beers sold, so she can check it against the actual amount of commission received from the bar/restaurant. It would kind of protect her against being screwed by the restaurant which I'm sure is often necessary.

Anyone able to translate the OP into english for me, Thanks.

The bar/restaurant has to provide proof of purchase invoices for the product involved.

If the numbers of tops show sales of, say 50 cases that month, and they can only prove purchases of 35. the commission will be worked out on the lower figure.

Buy 50 x 12 cases, sell 40 cases ,you have 120 bottles left,sold 480 bottles,

no need to count the tops, but seeing the simple answer is not always forth coming.

The rep pays a small commission to the establishment on bottles sold.

The way they choose to prove what has been sold is by using used bottle tops, as it seems to be a good indicator that the product has been sold.

If you cannot provide documentation relating to the purchase of their product, they will give you nothing.

This method has been in use for the past 10 years that I'm aware of and possible longer.
