LA investigates knife purportedly found at OJ Simpson home

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Detectives are investigating a knife purportedly found some time ago at the former home of O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted of murder charges in the 1994 stabbings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman, a police spokesman said Friday.

The knife was supposedly found by a citizen, possibly during demolition the home years ago, and turned over to a now-retired police motorcycle officer who was working as a filming location security guard, police Capt. Andy Neiman said.

The knife came to light in the last month, but Neiman did not say how that occurred. He stressed that the authenticity of the story was not confirmed.

"This whole story is possibly bogus from the get-go," he said.

The knife is being analyzed by a Los Angeles Police Department crime lab. Neiman said investigators didn't know the identity of the person who handed it over and asked him or her to come forward.

The weapon used in the killings has been a mystery for decades.

The killings on June 12, 1994, led to the "Trial of the Century" in which the former football star was acquitted in October 1995 by a jury that deliberated only four hours.

In 1997, a civil court jury found Simpson liable for the slayings and awarded millions of dollars in damages to families of the victims.

Neiman did not believe that Simpson could be charged again with murder if the knife is linked to the killings, citing double jeopardy.

"I'm not an attorney, but it's my understanding from being a police officer for nearly 30 years that double jeopardy would be in place here," he said.

Loyola Law School professor Laurie Levenson, a former federal prosecutor who is a longtime observer of the Simpson case, agreed.

"If they were going to find this knife and make it useful in the murder trial they should have found it 20 years ago, and they didn't," she said. "It will just raise more questions about the incompetence of the investigation and probably lead to more books and more movies."

Simpson is imprisoned in Nevada for a 2008 kidnapping and armed robbery conviction.

The account of the knife's discovery was first reported by TMZ.

The department was looking into whether criminal charges could be filed against the ex-officer who held onto the knife, according to Neiman. An officer who comes into contact with evidence is required to turn it over to investigators, he said.

Will add more profits to the bottom line of the American Crime Story series currently airing that covers the OJ Simpson trial. Or is that me being a little cynical? Good series by the way. John Travolta is the star of the series he really is playing a great role.

How 'bout handing the knife to Royal Thai Police forensics to investigate, ha ha ha.

Case would be solved "within 48 hours".

Burmese, I mean Mexican, did it.

Unbelievable...nothing in this story relates in the slightest to Thailand or the RTP but you still managed to get some Thai bashing in...B@nk3r! Hopefully you'll actually "do a boomerang" and return from whence you came

It would be interesting if the forensic pathologists found blood on the knife or it matched the wound patterns on the victims though. wonder if they've told Mr Simpson of the find and if so, whether he's broken a sweat.

No, the story had nothing whatsoever to do with Thailand or Thai cops.

But that shouldn't be allowed to get in the way of a little spontaneous denigration of Thais.

All in fun, of course.

If indeed the knife will be found to be the murder weapon, than OJ is more stupid than anyone imagined....

He can't be tried again for the murders.

Double jeopardy laws.

All I can say is, KOI PANG. I doubt it is the knife, but the police have shown a high degree

of incompetence in this case and this would just be another example of that incompetence

whether it is the murder weapon or not. coffee1.gif

If indeed the knife will be found to be the murder weapon, than OJ is more stupid than anyone imagined....

The day after the murders, when press corps were massing around the entry gates to OJ's mansion, a well-dressed man walked through the crowd and into the mansion. He then reappeared, grinning mischievously, while wading back through the crown of reporters, to enter his expensive car and drive off. Oh, when he exited, he was carrying a briefcase which he was not carrying when he entered. He was OJ's lawyer. Remember: lawyer/client privilege? He could have been carrying out a rolled-up blanket with a body inside, and no one could legally stop him, because he was OJ's lawyer.

Also, when OJ got out of the taxi at the airport, the evening of the crime, he threw a bunch of stuff into a trash barrel there. The taxi driver testified as much, but by then it was too late to check what was thrown out.

It's all moot. Nearly everyone in the US knew OJ was the murderer. Can't be tried again due to 'double jeopardy' laws. Maybe he can be tried again for 'creating a nuisance' being a litterbug (leaving bloody bodies on the ground), I don't know. At least he's now in prison, where he deserves the worst that his fellow prisoners can dish up (or ram up).
