Clinton urges candidates to present 'credible' economic plan

KEN THOMAS, Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Hillary Clinton said Friday the nation needs a "new bargain" for the economy and called upon all the presidential candidates to offer a "credible strategy" for raising wages as her primary race against rival Bernie Sanders shifts to a series of Rust Belt contests.

Clinton's address at Detroit Manufacturing Systems, a manufacturer of instrument panels for cars, offered her the opportunity to contrast herself with both Sanders and business mogul Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate.

"Anyone running for president owes it to you to come up with real ideas, not an ideology, not an old set of talking points but a credible strategy designed for the world we live in now," Clinton said in remarks pointed at both rivals.

Sanders, who is trying to stage an upset in next week's Michigan primary, has accused Clinton of supporting trade deals that have had "disastrous" consequences for workers. And he has sought to diminish Clinton's standing by implying she waffled when she initially called the Trans Pacific Partnership trade as the "gold standard" as secretary of state but later opposed the deal.

Clinton made clear to differentiate with Republicans, saying there were "so many insults" at Thursday night's Republican debate "it was hard to keep track." She said the "biggest insult of all was to the American people" and the economy was an "afterthought" during the Republican debate.

Republicans shot back, with the Republican National Committee accusing Clinton of promising a "trillion-dollar tax hike" and "four more years of Obamanomics."

In the address, Clinton called for a so-called "clawback" of tax benefits for companies that ship jobs overseas, rescinding tax relief and other incentives intended to encourage domestic investment. Revenue raised by this "clawback" would then be used to support investment in the United States.

The Democrats' focus on manufacturing jobs and trade policy is forming the backdrop for Michigan's primary and contests on March 15 in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri amid global economic weakness.

President Barack Obama's decision to rescue the U.S. automakers still reverberates through the nation's manufacturing belt, but many communities have struggled with the shift of factory jobs to Mexico and Asia.

Trailing Clinton in the chase for delegates, Sanders has ratcheted up his criticism of her past support for trade deals, including the North American Free Trade Agreement and normalizing trade relations with China. Both were signed by President Bill Clinton while she was first lady.

Including superdelegates, Clinton now leads Sanders 1,066 to 432, according to the latest Associated Press delegate count. It takes 2,383 delegates to win.

Responding to Clinton's speech Friday, Sanders said in a statement that "the American people are sick and tired of establishment politicians who promise to create manufacturing jobs during campaign season, but support trade policies that make it easier to outsource these jobs the day after they get elected."

Clinton said on trade the next president would need "judgment and experience" and she would not support any deal unless it creates good jobs, raises wages and protects the nation's security.

She also sought to undercut Sanders' credentials on the economy, accusing the senator of failing to produce a detailed plan to promote manufacturing and pointed to his past opposition to the federal Export-Import Bank, which makes and guarantees loans to help foreign customers buy U.S. goods.

Clinton has proposed the same failed policies we've had for the past 40 years. What is it about her that makes her think they will start working now?

Trump has made a lot of sweeping proposals to bring jobs back from China and Mexico, to stop exporting jobs, to stop letting illegals work when they work for small wages that undercut Americans...

Hillary is totally clueless.

Cheers.

"...called upon all the presidential candidates to offer a "credible strategy" for raising wages"

I prefer the credible strategy for reducing government debts and budget deficit.

I've got a credible plan, instead of thinking of new ways and taxes to punish Americans who choose to invest or "hide" their money abroad, let's change the taxes and laws that chased that money out of the country in the first place. I know that is harder to fit on a bumper sticker than "eat the rich!", but it could work.

the USA has tens of millions of better qualified men and women to run for this office. we get these clowns. I can tell you, folks voting for Trump are not voting for him... they are sending a message to what is no longer a political party, the GOP. Chomsky as usual already came out way ahead of the rest of us, and spoke it so accurately you have to use his words to describe it: the Republican party is no longer a political party... it is a radical insurgency. and here's my contribution: the US presidency has become a worthless job, the most significant role now is pardoning a turkey once a year, and the turkey is selected by staff not by the president running around in the woods somewhere. Trump has been a nutcase from the gitgo, with "China totally controls North Korea" being more disturbing and irrational than ***any*** of his penis size analogies. John Mac Cane, Mr. GOP who selected Sarah "Dinosaur" Palin as his running mate, came out after Romney to attack Trump and then said that the US faces it's "worst security threat in 70 years" just 2 days ago... worse than the Cuban Missle Crisis, North Korea, the Cold War Vietnam... and I have no idea even what Mac Cane is talking about. Penis stories make more sense. Another example, at one of the first GOP debate's they spent less than one minute talking about Climate Change, with the argument and media quote being "the USA is not a planet". The USA is not a planet.... and Bangladesh, Bangkok and Saigon all already have encountered their first "real life" salt water intrusion events. The next target on the Saltwater List is the New York subway without which there is no New York City. Anyone who has taken a boat ride around Manhattan knows it is sitting exactly on the water line. 2 degrees takes us back to the Pliocene with 20 meters of global ocean rise and it is already baked in the cake. But Mister New York City plans a wall at the Mexican border. Ummm.... he will need a wall but it'll need to be a tad north of Mexico. I sure hope so, my favorite hat shop is just off Canal Street.

Poor old Hillary needs the other team to give her ideas that will help her pathetic campaign.

Saw her campaigning on a news channel today and she was telling her peeps how terrible it was that companies are moving overseas and taking jobs. By golly she was naming names of these companies also.

Funny thing it was the same companies Trump was mentioning as far back as three weeks ago.

Clinton urges candidates to present 'credible' economic plan

Translation: "Can you quadruple the current US deficient like I plan to do during my first term in office? I mean really, what difference does it make!!!" ermm.gif

They will give their economic plan when she releases the transcripts of her speeches issued to the Wall Street bankers.

She asked for credible plans. The Republican candidates already have released their plans: all involve massive tax cuts especially favorable to the .01 percent. Do you realize that a majority of Republican voters want taxes raised on the wealthy and yet every Republican candidate - including Trump - propose to do just the opposite. So tell me, who exactly is calling the shots in the Republican party?

The official Republican (and Democrat) platforms will be announced at their national convention when they select a candidate.

It makes little difference what the candidates are bleating about at this stage.

Surely you already knew that.
