You should have mentioned from your other thread that it is Pattaya immigration (Jomtien).

Different immigration offices, different handling.

Are you here on a visa exempt entry, 30 day stamp?

Also very different req. at different banks.

Have you tried Kasikorn on Royal Garden, beach road?

They used to be very easy to handle (for a savings account).

On what basis are you staying in Thailand ?

This will have a direct effect on

1. Being able to obtain a Certificate of Address other than from your Embassy

2. A banks willingness to open an account in your name.

Go to the nearest immigration office with .......................

Copies of your passport data page, visa, entry stamp, departure card and proof of address.

Complete an application form.

Many immigration offices will not provide an "address certificate" unless your address is registered and 90 day reports are being made.

Fees for the certificate vary.

If you are refused then you will have to obtain a letter confirming your address from your Embassy.

10000 Baht deposit: that is plain exortion!

Unfortunately it is not the first report about this "insurance", right word for that: blackmail.

May happen at other branches too.

700 Baht: yes Kasikorn is expensive, but includes SMS notification which other banks charge separately.

You could do the forum a favor and do a last try at Royal Garden and report back.

It was so easy at least until 2013.

Use the documents you have.

They might ask for your (a) home country address (some new requirement).

Are you US citizen?

I went to the branch at royal garden.

the only way for me to open an account is to purchase

an insurance plan at 10.000 a year for 10 yrs at 1.5 interest rate.

You can withdraw the 10.000 but you are given back only a small fraction.

with 1.5% return you must wait the 7th year to break even and withdraw thev10.000 .

after 9 banks visit there s only one bank that only neededa police certificate to open a free checking aca count. if i can get this certificate online its the best way to go

As sunnyjim5 said in thread #6, most Immigration offices will require that you have done at least one 90 day report in their office before providing the Residence Certificate document. Here is the application form.

Are you sure you understood what you were told ?

"insurance plan at 10.000 a year for 10 yrs at 1.5 interest rate.

What you report makes no sense.
Which bank is this ------------A banks requirements for opening an account are usually listed on their website..
With only a tourist visa no bank will give you a "checking" account with or without a "police certificate"

Nah don't believe what they saying. They were trying to fool me with this insurance a few years ago. Ask to speak to the manager. If that doesn't work try another location.

oh yeah? what I report make no sense??

why don't you go and ask yourself?

that's what they told me dude, like it or not.

I am also surprised as the OP wrote about opening a savings account in another thread.

But now uses the term "checking account" (current account)?

Completely different requirements!

Basically no way with a TR.

All that I wrote refers to savings account!

A savings account serves most purposes of a tourist or expat. ATM card/withdrawals, payments, online access, even "virtual credit card" for internet shopping. Just no credit, always in the black.

So what is the checking account needed for?

Try a different bank, the 2,500 insurance is a Kasikorn scam and not required, Keep trying different banks/branches until you find one that's sensible.

Officially (legally after the last enforcement) to open a bank account here you need:

non-imm visa (any type)

valid passport obviously

depending on visa, a work permit

(tabian bahn or proof of residence)

and that is pretty much it, mostly no tabien bahn, no letter from your embassy

But TIT and depending on where you are, the bank, the staff etc it can be done.

All you need is a deposit of as little as 100Baht and a payment of 200/250 for a card, that is it. Anyone trying to make you pay extra for insurance or more for a card is taking the mickey. SMS notification is pretty much standard now .... at no extra charge unless you have a business account.

A bank in a small village ?

There cannot be many of those or do all small villages have banks in Thailand ?

Run, don't walk, run from the Royal Garden branch...they are definitely trying to scam you. Some branches are like that...figure farangs for cash cows (fee-wise).

To open a regular savings account the initial deposit requirement is 500 baht (which you could withdraw in full 5 minutes later if desired), a debit card which would have an initial issue fee of around Bt200 and annual fee of around Bt200, and you could even possibly get ibanking access. Some evil branches really push their pricey card products which come with almost useless accident insurance and other insurance related products....they continue to do it so they must have some good success and they have little to fear from bank regulators/consumer protection agencies.

This is the fourth or fifth time I've heard about this scam from Kasikorn, do you not think that senior management of the bank would be highly pee'd off if they found out the banks reputation was being washed down the karzi so publically and so quickly because of these sort of shenanigans by rogue branches, in no way is it bank policy!

Perhaps try Bangkok Bank on 2nd road. Their requirements are here: http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/ForeignCustomers/Pages/Openinganaccountnew.aspx

From that list.

"An official document from another country, such as a document from the
relevant agency giving evidence of the customer’s right to receive pension
funds, OR a letter of reference from one of the following:"

This is a standard Kasikorn scam. Thai friend got the same story, believed it and paid up. Insurance is real but of very limited value.

I don't believe they are targetting foreigners in particular - just the naive. No different to banks all around the world

go to Jomtiem immigration armed with everything you have for proof of address ie letter from hotel ect ect and completed form for car licence which means you will need a medical form easily obtained from doctor 100 to 300bht then when your at the counter 11 i believe but may be 9 explain you only need a cert of residence to open a bank account, at the counter not to the front desk jockeys they will say no can do. No problem (this is why you need med certificate as front desk jockeys wont let you get a number without full documentation} pay the tea money ( other will say it should be free i can assure you it is not free there). I did this with a friend two weeks ago same as you he was in hotel the accepted that. He then opened an account at Bangkok bang beach road branch normal saving with atm card no internet banking they wont give you that on a visa exempt. branch is between 13 and 13/2

I have opened accounts with most Thai banks over the years and there is usually no problem

Kbank like to get at least 500 as the first lodgement but you can take it out again 5 min later from the atm if you are that stuck for 500thb...

Recently opened a new account in Krungsri and they wanted 40k lodgement in it... Sounds excessive but they make up the rules as they go I think...

It doesn't matter anyway as you are free to take it out if you need to
