A friend of a tenant of mine died suddenly today in Hua Hin. Two old guys who for the last ten years have been spending 4 months each year in Thailand. Stayed in different locations, and today my tenant was informed by the landlord of the now dead guy, that his friend had passed away. My tenant/friend speaks very poor English, so he called me for help. Tried to call the Swedish Embassy, but they are closed until Monday. Even the emergency number was answered by an answering machine !! Who do you inform in a situation like like ? What is procedure? My tenant was clearly shaken by the death of his friend, so if you have any idea on how to handle this sad situation, please share.............

Does he know the family of his friend.. maybe best to contact them first to know what they want to have done with the body. I would not expect the embassy to be all that helpful, should try to find out if there is insurance and what the family wants.

Some years ago I had a customer visiting our company whose brother had flown out from the UK to join him for a holiday after he finished his meetings. The brother had a heart attack in a car in the middle of nowhere. They rushed him to a rural hospital but he could not be revived.

My customer was in shock and as a visitor had no idea how to deal with the situation in Thailand. I contacted the British Embassy at the after hours emergency number. Despite their reputation, they were as helpful as they could be and were very sympathetic.

The embassy recommended a Thai funeral director that was familiar with the procedures necessary when a UK citizen dies in Thailand. From there the situation was handled very professionally and I recall the cost being surprisingly modest.

I guess that the Swedish Embassy may do the same. They have surely dealt with this situation many times.

Does not the local police have to be informed of the death of a foreigner, even if the circumstances are not suspect?

I am certain that this is the case.

I know that a friend of mine who was a Consular official often received calls from the police about deaths.

There is a Sweden Honorary Consul in Hua Hin/Cha-am, so although the the embassy in BKK may be closed, the Consul in Hua Hin might still be contactable today.

An update. Police was contacted, and as someone mentioned, they had done it before. So from there it was a very simple exercise, body was taken to the morgue and all further action will be taken by Thai authorities and the deceased's insurance company. Family wanted the body to Sweden.

On a side note : This country and its superstition never ceases to amaze you. When the body was found, the guy had been dead for 15-20 hours, but the despite that fact the emergency-crew gave him oxygen and administered CPR as they carried the body out, all for the benefit of the onlookers and the landlord ( apartment-complex), never good for business if clients die on the premises. So officially he died on way to the hospital...................
