In this Dec. 1, 2015 file photo, a car model, known as a ‘pretty’, poses for a photograph at Bangkok’s Motor Show.

BANGKOK — As the biggest Motor Show on the Bangkok calendar pulls into town next week, the Ministry of Culture Friday launched its annual moral campaign against models who show too much skin.

Culture Minister Veera Rojpojanarat on Friday said his team had visited Grand Prix International Plc, the organizer of Bangkok International Motor Show, to make sure that their models only dress in a way appropriate for Thai culture.

He is a bit late for that. Not many years ago you would not see women going shopping in short shorts but it is quite common now, spaghetti straps, etc. The country has moved on while the MP remains in the dark ages. Where do they pick these culture ministers? Is it a prerequisite that they are old fashioned and behind the times.

A return to the dark age. The government is crackers.

If these moral dinosaurs actually understood what foreigners experience as "Thainess", they would want to hide it, not boast about it................

What's it got to do with anyone, let alone the Ministry of Culture? Absolute nonsense.

Hello mr culture minister. We are now in the 21st century, not the 19th century.

Get with it, lighten up.

Or as the popular saying says, go with the flow.

If these moral dinosaurs actually understood what foreigners experience as "Thainess", they would want to hide it, not boast about it................

Such as what? Indicate something that foreigners in general experience as Thainess as a bad thing. This is about the Bangkok International Motor Show, did you miss that?

I think he wants ladyboys dressed in military uniforms.

Or maybe replace them with monks to protect their car collections.

The minister is perfectly correct. He deserves the Order of the Trabant Hubcap.

Flash in the pan. The outraged moralists have got the annual biggie coming up.......songkran, spaghetti strap tops and wet tee shirts!

Too late for Thainess. Just look at the results from the extensive surgery...

Ohhh, I don't know. I've seen plenty of "pretties" at various events, and I think they show a lot of "Thainess". cheesy.gif

If he wants to hark back to the past, then all the females should be topless.

If the Culture Minister cared to check some historical references, he would have discovered that until pretty recently, the Thai women were walking bare breasted. Had something to do with the hot climate? Only after the influx of prude Chinese, and their insistence on covering all that things changed.

So yeah, I for one would definitely welcome the return to the Traditional Thainess.

Models to reflect "Thainess?" Well what could be more Thai than a lady boy--let's book 'em for future shows.

Suggested candidates:

What the culture minister fails to realise is that those women are there to attract people to look closer. Pretties remember. Sexy too. I can imagine the fight to see who has the most sexy traditional Thai costume there. Why doesn't he just allow them to dress like they did 200 years ago with no tops at all? That would really be a cultural show.

Thainess. OK, they will be accompanied by monkeys, snakes and parrots and charge people crazy money to be photographed with them.

I would assume that the car companies got to choose what their models wore.

I don't remember seeing model No1 ... and I probably would have remembered .....

the pretty is thainess to me? .. but whats really going on here is they are getting ready to sort out thailands open secret, the s/x industry, this has been left until last as its going to cause an uproar gigglem.gif

Nationalism, Authoritarianism, over the top Conservatism, along with moralizing and preaching from dinosaurs who certainly cheat on their wives, ... heck they probably cheat on their mistresses, ...

Seriously, these guys are not to be taken seriously.... coffee1.gif

To be fair - these girls add nothing to the motor show.

All that happens is that a bunch of adolescent serial masturbators crowd the girls taking pictures with their SLRs, completely blocking out any view you might have had of the actual car.

Indeed, it was only as recent as 15 January 1941 that the government of Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram issued the cultural mandate, 'On Thai dress,' where Thai people were encouraged to adopt Western, as opposed to traditional, attire which—at that time—still consisted of women going about their daily business topless.

Everything is the business of the authoritarian government.

Left until last? You're kiddin', right?

The only accomplishment of this government, so far, is to ban loungers on the beaches of Phuket.

Nothing is going to happen with the sex industry. They can't even make people obey traffic lights!

Only because they havent yet worked out how to make the light turn green when the military or a hiso is approaching and turn red for the peasant masses.

After a statement like that, one could make the presumption you bat for the other side.
