If the guy wasn't a foreigner, if it were a Thai/Thai couple, would anyone even think twice about these photos? Doubtful.

No, he probably, like everyone but you apparently, has noticed that almost every single personal care product in Thailand proudly boasts its "whitening" properties, and that every "superstar," soapie actress, or motor show 'pretty' is whiter than white (apart from the villains or comic relief - they're almost always brown). In case you missed it, aspiring to be white is a thing here...
