ldiablo
This is getting out of hand here in Thailand. Foreigners jumping off and falling off balconies. I don't read about this in any other country on a daily basis. Maybe time to brick over and eliminate access to balconies in this country and higher walls on the roof. kiwikeith
Bizarre reporting…what are they trying to insinuate? Patong Police are investigating a foreign man found at the scene. The heavily-tattooed man, who police have yet to publicly identify, was wearing a 'Dope It' t-shirt. If this is true then it could have been an argument with a nutter BF, who pushed her off, 19 is a bit young to jump and co-ordination usually good that young-- unless waisted on a hallucigen. If there was a perp I hope they catch him.
grumpyoldman
Longtime female friend of mine's, daughter, is finishing up high school and typically kids do trips at that age, head abroad with their friends. Maybe like this case. She asked me my opinion of her daughter coming here alone, and I told her bad idea. In a group of people (safety in numbers), couple girlfriends and/ or couple guys along o.k., I said in that case they would probably have a good time. Other family friend's kids came in a group of eight about three years ago and they had a blast. Summer post high school trip is going to be a month of backpacking in the Colorado Mountains with a bunch of her chums . Again, any family or friends that see this thread, super sorry for your loss. terrible tragedy.
starchild5
Very sad. You have to wonder. Is it just foreigners that are susceptible to poor balcony construction. Proportionally - shouldnt there be 1000s of thais plunging to their doom annually? Is this a plague just affecting tourists? Farangs have a average height of 5 feet 9 inches or more..While Thai's, Asians have a avg. Height of 5 feet 5 inches or less... The railings of balconies in Thailand was created for Thai People NOT for farangs...The higher railings as suggested for Farangs would be too inconvenient for Thai's to lean over and smoke or put their arms and drink beer etc..It will block the view .. Its no brainier really..If you love your life...and found out the railings to be low..You should not go near it...I have done it many times myself...If the balcony railings are low..I will not go near it, The drunken low life loser I'm ...I don't have control overmyself when I'm drunk ..so i never open my balcony when i'm drunk

peter48
I think every youngster , student, gap year traveling to LOS should have a health and safety pack. Balconies, pools, rides, motor cycles, helmets, dreadful minibuses , alcohol would feature for this country with its massive accident rates and high death toll of visiting innocents.. Sparkles
Balconies in Thailand have no height regulations like in the west, in Australia it is a minimum of 1m, I have seen many in Thailand way below that height so it makes it very easy to tumble over. Rip young lady. Balconies in Australia have poor height regulations like in the West, in the Netherlands it is a minimum of 1.2m for 4stories or higher, I have seen many in Australia way below that height, so it makes it very easy to tumble over. Ps. Building regulations like these are generally based on its general population's height, which in Thailand was a lot less than in Australia, and in Australia is less than in the Netherlands. So one could say that the balcony railing are too low in Thailand or Australia, or that some visiting foreigners are just too tall. The Gold Coast in QLD ,Australia has 1,000's of high rise building with balconies but people manage not to fall over them. We are in a once a week "drop" cycle in Thailand

Rip young lady.Point out that it is now 1000mm, however prior to the current Code of Practice it was 850mm, and there is no requirement for older buildings to be updated to new standard, there will be many thousands of buildings from before mid 80s that have these lower railings. NZ has 1000mm for residential and 1100mm for commercial buildings At 1.87m those older ones are far too low for me to lean against. Refer:http://www.healthsafety.com.au/balustrade-and-railing-height-regulations/ Yep.... It's true....it took awhile, but we finally realized that British standards weren't really all that good, so we started reforming all standards supplied by the commonwealth, to make our lives safer.... after all, the good old empire has sacrificed enough of us already
dunroaming
Whilst unsafe balcony rails are a factor the amount of deaths from balcony/roof falls can't all be put down to them. At best maybe twenty percent I would have thought. Some will be suicides and some will be murder. Whatever the real percentage of each will never be known, but being a country where the police investigations are a joke.............
