I am thinking of getting a one entry Tourist Visa to Thailand:

Enter: 17 May 2016

Depart: 4 July 2016

My ticket in and out of Thailand is:

Arrival: 17 May 2016

Departure: 10 August 2016

Side Trip to Spain

4 July 2016-20 July 2016

Re-entry into Thailand on USA Passport (no visa)

21 July 2016 - 10 August 2016

When the Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. looks at the paperwork provided (airline tickets, etc.), will they be freaked out by the fact that I am returning to Thailand with JUST my USA passport (which allows a 30 day entry).

The alternative is to enter, leave after 30 days and return), go to Spain, and re-enter again for the remaining 30 days.

I don't want any problem with the Thai Embassy in Washington D.C.

I hope this all makes sense.

It does actually because this software is a bit archaic. It was posted once and ended up being posted three times. I am sure this happens all of the time. Take a pill.

As far as the tourist visa is concerned, the consulate will consider your exit ticket the one on July 4, for your Spain trip, if you booked that already. The return flight for the August 10th is irrelevant for the US consulate.

When you enter Thailand the second time that's when your August 10 exit becomes relevant, if you are asked to provide it at the checkin counter in Spain for your Spain-Thailand flight or/and upon arrival in Thailand, when you may be asked to produce evidence of this August 10 exit.

Your original plan sounds good, absolutely no issue with a 60 day tourist visa followed by a 30 day visa exempt.
