BANGKOK: -- Reckless drivers will have their driving licenses seized and their cars impounded as part of the road safety campaign during the Songkran festival.

Motorists driving cars which are deemed as unsafe may also have their vehicles impounded too.

Publicity of road safety campaign will be launched during the run-up to Songkran festival at the order of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan in charge of security affairs.

The deputy prime minister chaired a meeting on Thursday with agencies concerned to discuss road safety measures and publicity campaign to urge drivers to be aware of safety.

All provincial governors down to kamnans and village heads have been ordered to conduct publicity campaign in their respective provinces and villages to inform of the need to drive safely in order to reduce road accidents.

However, General Prawit said that the road safety measures were not only intended for Songkran festival but for throughout the year.

I drove home after the Songkran festivities in Pattaya a few years ago. Absolute insanity on the roads. Pure mayhem. And not a cop in sight.

We're hearing that threatening word again..'may'..this, along with 'urge' means IMO nothing much is gonna change. If I'd just read on here that the RTP had just received 150 tow-trucks to be distributed to areas throughout the nation for the purpose of taking away & impounding vehicles, now that would have been a big step forward, & maybe sent a clear message out. Wonder what the Songkran carange figures will be this year..?

Reckless drivers should lose their licence and have their vehicles impounded for a month.

Vehicles driven by persons without a valid licence should be impounded for a month too, including any motorcycles and side cars, in addition to a hefty fine for the driver.

I agree, but that is what occurs in civilized/developed countries. This is Thailand - it's all about money. Rule of law is but a concept not yet conceived.
