Filipino Con Artist On Sukumvit

Recommended Posts

Over the years I have been stopped occasionally on Sukumvit by these guys (who I think are Filipinos) passing themselves off as Thais. They usually ask something like where did you get those nice shoes or something like that to get a conversation started. They all ask where are you from and when you tell them they always reply that they have a sister/cousin/brother there going to school. That's usually when I tell them to get lost. My question, has anyone ever actually hung around to find out what these guys are up to? I'm sure they are somehow trying to seperate you from your money but what exactly is the scam? Also has anyone ever actually gotten their fortune told by one of the Indian fortune tellers that prowl around Sukumvit?

Fillipino card game. If you get chatting to these guys you'll soon be invited to the house to advise that daughter/son going abroad especially since amazingly they will definately be going to your country soon. You then end up dragged into a card game etc etc, you lose your cash.

They are Filipino con-men who will get your confidence and take you to a bent card game and extract money from you, they might offer you a drugged beer then you will wake up the following morning with all your possessions missing and if you are really unlucky a violated rectum.

Don't waste time and money with fortune tellers unless they are reputable; some Indian astrologers are knowledgable but hard to find.

The other common scam these kind of guys pull is to invite you for a drink and they slip something into your drink to drug you and end up robbing you that way. Don't know if that's what these particular guys are doing, but Filipinos are well-known for pulling this scam in the Philippines as well as the card game scam.

Yup I was approached with the same thing in downtown KL where they tried to get me to go home with them to meet the sister who was going to Liverpool university in December to study on a program that i knew started in late september. As I laughed and got up to walk away, what surprised me the most was how quick a taxi suddenly pulled up as if in anticipation of me going somewhere with them.... needless to say I entered into a 100 metre fast dash rather quickly and got out of there.

The Dude has never run into these Filipino con guys but on 2 occasions has been approached by highly undiggable African guys who start up a conversation. The Dude will listen for about 2 minutes before saying he's gotta go before hearing the punch line. Now what are those dudes up to?

The African guys are more treacherous than the Filipino guys. They will invite you to a sex party, then drug you with tainted beer, then whisk you off to a makeshift operating theatre, where they will extract a kidney from your back in 8 minutes flat then stitch you up and prop you up against a brick wall.

Your kidney will be sold to a donor, usually a rich Chinese business man who is sick of life on dialysis.

Question to the mods, would it be OK to post photos here of the people in question? I think it would at least be helpful to suggest that we should stay away from them by face recognition. I know stickman has often warned of the possibilities. Someone sober would have no problem, however one may fall for it after having a few.

I had a filipino come up to me some years back near the Mah Boon Krong center while I was waiting for a bus. Asked me where I was from, and then quickly used that info to tell me how he was a big fan of the home team, his Mom went to school there, etc. He must have thought I was really stupid because he tried to tell me he was Thai. I gave him the bum's rush as I knew he was up to no good. I recall reading later that the scam was to get you into a bogus card game, which jibes with what others have been saying here.

It amazes me that some mugs must actually fall for this, i mean they are still there so it was be profitable?

1 born every minute i guess.... i can just picture some idiot talking to them and thinking to himself "Yes a game of cards with this nice bloke does sound like fun!"

you know, if a few on here were to work together....

con the con men.

fun and funny aside, I could see them also being violent.

When I lived near the lower sois, I was approached almost daily. When a person says their from Wisconsin though, that normally shuts them up. Try it!

Black money scam is the usual. You know, they have a load of black coloured money that when magically washed with a special chemical becomes real money blah de blah. And yes, they will be needing money for that special chemical. :o

Nigerians have a rather mixed bag, I like the sex party idea the best.

But usually it is the black money as mentioned or the bank scams where it is a simple 'live' variation of the nigerian email/letter scams.

Fillipinos never had them approach.

Indians plenty of them MrLucky dudes.

I think I know the medical center where those operations take place...seriously.

"Don't waste time and money with fortune tellers unless they are reputable"

"reputable fortune tellers" - now, that's a real hoot - easily the funniest thning I've read on TV all day!

"Indian astrologers are knowledgable but hard to find."

Not for me. The same turban-wearing guy finds me twice a day, telling me I'm a lucky guy.

African people in Soi 5 are not all from Nigeria, but there is also a big community coming from western africa. those people are spoken or Peul or Wallof.

The best way I know to avoid wasing much time with them is simply to comunicate in Peul or Wallof, or eventually in Baoule, they all have the same reaction, they simply run (well if you can speak, it mean you can understand, by so you maybe know ther\ir names and be able to curse them .... african beliefs).

Be aware on the other hand, they are up to anything , as long as it mean money. Kidney is an option, but not the only one

Isn't Faceless Grawn a Filipino in Thailand? Have any of you fallen for her schtick and woken up sore in places?

Is there any group that wil do liposuction for extra??

Why not simply posting it? If it is objectional, the mods would delete them anyway. :o

some of these guys will take you to their homes, introduce you to their gorgeous twin sisters, and then leave you and the two girls alone for an hour or so to do lots of naughty things.

I've heard.

they use that excuse as the hook to get you to the house .then you get a beer in front of you and the cards come out . 'oh my brother works as a casino as a croupier and he will arrange for you to win all the time then we will share the winnings 50-50.'

just a few games to warm up first . then you lose and they lean on you to cough up the dosh.

they wait by ATM machines to ensure you have a big wedge on you before inviting you back .

they are all over town , i was accosted by a fip women at MBK with a similar tale ,but she was the hook, very attractive with large exposed jugs.

Hey Soju,

I was stationed in the Philippines for 8 years with the US Navy and along the way I learned how to speak fairly fluent Tagalog (their national language) and in addition to that I saw these con-men a mile away and definitely avoided them.

Next time I'm in Bangkok, I may try to con the con-men just to have some fun. I'm too smart to let anyone let alone a conman rob me out of my hard earned money.

Food for thought

Mike

The Middle Eastern fortune tellers that hang out around Foodland use the old carnival, cold-reading routine, starting off with broad revelations, then fine tuning per your feed-back, (death in family, money problems, etc).

Then they intimate that they have a strong connection with you and for a fee (~2000b) will reveal important details as to what lies ahead.

Well dressed and articulate, all they're missing is the crystal ball and dark room.

I had mine own prediction for a gullible acquaintance who swore they were legit, Cobra's prediction of course was quite accurate, the rube was going to be relieved of most of the baht he had on him.

As to the Flips, haven't run across them yet, and as to nefarious Nigerians and organ harvesting, that's most likely pulp fiction and urban legend.

Anyway, mom told you to never talk to strangers ... :o:D

:o I've never been approached by anybody trying to scam me. Or at least I don't think I have. Maybe I'm so dense I don't know.

The organ thing is worrying if true. I can't imagine that it is, organ donation and receipt is a very complex process based on tissue typing and matching. Unless you had some pretty serious testing done before hand you are going to be safe. No body in their right mind would accept an organ without knowing its provenance. :D

(who I think are Filipinos)

I'm curious to know why you thought they were Filipinos?

I think you should be more certain about this before you make such assumptions. Filipinos, Malaysians, Thais, Laosans, Vietnamese, Cambodians and Indonesians (and others) all have a very similar look.

Was it their English ability that lead you to that assumption, or perhaps they spoke Tagalog?
