BANGKOK:-- It was not a sight you see everyday even in the crazy world of Thai roads - part of a dump truck wedged under a pedestrian bridge and the cab of the 22 wheeler high in the air!

The bizarre scene cause a seven kilometre tailback in Monday's rush hour traffic on the King Kaew - Lat Krabang road in outer Bangkok.

Three cranes had to be used to extricate the giant vehicle as hapless driver Bin Sawangphop, 35 from Surin looked on.

He had been driving the dump truck to Ang Thong after a delivery of stone to a building site at the airport. He told police that he heard a noise and was suddenly thrust into the air hitting his head and chest on the steering wheel.

When he recovered his senses he climbed down and alerted authorities. He suffered minor cuts.

An initial investigation revealed a possible faulty mechanism that somehow engaged by itself as Bin was changing gear. He told police he was proceeding normally but is still facing charges for negligent driving resulting in damage to public property.

Police said some 200,000 baht of damage was done to signage, lighting and the underside of the bridge. Engineers are checking the bridge to make sure there is no structural damage.

Police may proceed with charges against the company that owns the vehicle, Prinda Co Ltd, for operating a vehicle in an unroadworthy condition. Investigations continue.

Most of the trucks are old and not roadworthy, maybe they should look into a nationwide re-inspection and re-education and get someone to enforce the rules. Also why they not get 2nd hand cars/trucks from other asian countries like Japan they still in good quality and very cheap, these relics should be replaced and the import tax slashed for the sake of public safety.

Who's to say the bed was raised because the truck was unroadworthy? Perhaps the driver is just a moron?

Yes it's a dump truck, and the dump bed was raised while he was driving. That's what they are referring to when they say that the vehicle had a malfunction while he shifted gears, the malfunction was that the bed went up. The levers to raise the dump bed are usually located close to the gear shift lever but are usually shorter and harder to reach. The question is how in the heck did the bed raise up high enough to hit the bridge without the driver noticing? It's usually pretty noticeable when you are in the drivers seat and the bed goes up.

I saw a story similar to this in Florida a few years back where the cab smashed into the overpass, and that was all she wrote. Had he been driving at a higher rate of speed, that could easily have happened here. The guy got extremely lucky that this wasn't his last ride.

It was the dips*** who was driving this wagon+drag that created this incident..the mechanical/hydraulic tipping gear worked just fine..& the photo proves this!

(Same with yesterday's bus/train collision..nothing to do with the train, the crossing, or the bus..Driver mentality..or lack of it).

How do you know if that handle was in good condition? Or maybe he brought his dog with him in the truck and it stepped on the handle?

The driver did not make enough temple trips. It amazes me that these unsafe vehicles travel the roads and nothing is done till an accident happens. Then the law comes down with both feet same as the boat explosion. Unless his company comes to the rescue I am afraid this poor guy is in big trouble. Somehow I doubt that they will. They will have a replacement driver ready to roll the next day.

Yes sure as he was changing gear he hit the lever that operates the hydraulic tipping mechanism of the traybody. These levers do have a safety latch that must be moved FIRST before the operating lever for the hydraulic tipping mechanism can be moved this requires both hands. In the real world they call it SAFETY. This being LOS the smart ass driver(s) tie this safety latch in the open position so it does not require both hands to move the operating lever.

The more real world equipment the Thais acquire the more f#!^%ups you will see appearing.

P'raps those who are berating Thai truck drivers should take a gander at the videos of serially stonkingly stupid US (I'm presuming - certainly not Thailand) truck and van drivers from the 11footeight .com website to get a sense of perspective.
