My Swedish friend arrived in Macau a few days ago with a couple more Swedes and has lost his passport. He was due to fly from Macau to Bangkok with his friends returning to Macau after 10 days in Thailand.

He has been to police and immigration here in Macau and got a document allowing him to go to Hong Kong. There he will get a temporary passport (I think it is just a 1 page doucument) from the Swedish embassy.

He wishes to enter Thailand from Hong Kong and apply for a normal Swedish passport there.

He was going to go to the Hong Kong Thai embassy to try and get a Thai tourist visa.

1. Firstly with his temporary Swedish passport can he fly to Bangkok and just get a visa exemption on arrival?

2. If so will the airline let him on plane?

3. If not can he get a Thai tourist visa in Hong Kong? What other proofs or documents would he require.

4. And again would the airline let him board?

He is going to Hong Kong early this morning. On his phone he has etickets for his return flight from Bangkok to Macau, and from Hong Kong to Sweden. He is married to Thai lady and they have a child, they are living in Sweden.

Thanks in advance for any up todate information.

I believe the critical requirement is that the emergency travel document specifically mentions Thailand as one of the countries for which the document is valid. (Make sure Macau is included also.) I have no idea how restrictive Sweden is with respect to ETDs. Some countries only want to issue them for return to their home country. Assuming the ETD mentions Thailand, there should be no problem entering either visa exempt or with a visa. The airline will not have a problem with an ETD, though a supervisor might need to be involved.

I am nearly sure the above is true, but you may want to wait for UbonJoe's confirmation to be on the safe side.

I agree.

If the ETD allows travel to Thailand and a visa is not obtained, the airline may require an onward (out of Thailand) ticket within 30 days of arrival, before allowing boarding.

Police Report, if the passport is stolen.
A valid photo ID for identification.
If possible a birth certificate or "personbevis" which must not be older than one month.
For persons under 18, the consent of all guardians is nessesary.
The fee for passport renewal is paid by VISA/Mastercard or banktransfer/payment. Cash is not accepted. The current fee is HKD 1500.
If your passport was lost or stolen, you must bring a police report.
