During a weekend stroll I noticed that the entire north-eastern corner of the Thai Tobacco Monopoly complex is being demolished. Military vehicles, equipment and personnel are working on this project seven days a week.

I recall that at least one of the governments in power at the end of the twentieth century, in the days of a semblance of democracy, were committed to evicting the tobacco manufacturers and converting the area into a public park.

Is this the beginning of a similar project, or is there any truth to the rumour that the present administration are "bringing happiness to the people" by converting this area to a legalized marijuana plantation?

They are using the army to tear down the old covered car parking area opposite the back of the park. Have no idea what ultimate intention is. Doubt it a hemp plantation. ? haven't noticed any signs explaining what is going on.

It's being bulldozed to make way for a super-max security military prison to house the enemies of the Thai junta. Civil liberties and democracy in Thailand? Never happened before.

Army is still there today but not working. Interestingly, civilian contractor was unloading and setting up at least 3 small portable offices in recently cleared area near the klong (near bridge to soi 10).

Looks like it could be developing into a rather large project. Maybe a sign will be going up soon.
