Songkran Festivities Help

I will be in Bangkok for Songkran - I am a tourist and want to see it at least once. It seems like I have figured out where the main areas are (Khao San, etc.), but can't really tell if there are any actual scheduled activities like parades or anything like that. Are there any specific scheduled activities or is everybody just throwing water around the whole time? Any recommendations as to the best place to go check it out? Any guidance would be appreciated.
