45 Roti Saimai stalls in Ayutthaya are dismantled

AYUTTHAYA: -- Forty-five roadside stalls selling Roti Saimai or Thai cotton candy in Ayutthaya province were dismantled at the order of the provincial administration because their presence was deemed a traffic hazard to cars travelling on the Asian highway.

The forced eviction of the vendors’ stalls located on both sides of the Asian highway from kilometer markers 1-30 in Bang Pa-in, Bang Pahan and Phra Nakhon Sriayudya districts was undertaken by about 80 officials and workers led by Mr Chalardnop Thongthog, deputy director of the Ayutthaya highways office.

Prior to the forced eviction of the 45 roadside stalls, a meeting was held between representatives of the vendors and provincial officials led by Mr Raewat Prasong, the deputy governor.

It was agreed that the 45 stalls posed a traffic hazard because they were located too close to the road, bridges and busy intersections.

However, about 70 other stalls located on the highway which do not pose a threat to cars travelling on the road were allowed to carry on with their business until May after which they will have to move out or forcibly evicted.

Any vendors who return to the road to do the business will be liable to a three-month jailterm and/or a fine of 60,000 baht.

the biggest part of the problem is the idiot drivers that stop on the actual road to buy them so they dont have to get out of their cars. For some reason many thai drivers will simply stop in the road itself when there is plenty of space to park off the road just past or before the sellers but they refuse to walk any distance, if the police started fining and confiscating the cars and drivers that do it we might not have such a big problem with the sellers although they need to be a bot more thoughtful on where they place their stands.

have they been set back up yet?

Fot those of you who don't know what roti saimai is here's a video of how they make it. It's pure sugar contributing to rotten teeth and the diabetes epidemic in this Country.

From where will I procure my favourite 'Ngoo Nar' lunch time snack now? crying.gif

They also roast their cooking apron above open fire.

But 70 ! of those vendors in Ayutthaya? Was it too hard to think of seling something else or is that newyear tradition or so?

Arguably it's no different from "cotton candy" sold in North America, of which I have consumed every summer I grew up there. But I do understand your point about sugar awareness
