Watana's daughter seeks US hand to look into human rights contravention



BANGKOK: -- The daughter of former commerce minister Watana Muangsook today sought the hand of the US Embassy to look into her father's detention for attitude test by the military junta if it is a violation of human right.

Ms Weerada Muangsook today submitted a letter written by her father Watana before being detained on Monday to the US Embassy staff.

In the letter, Watana requested the US to investigate whether the National Council for Peace and Order abused power or not in detaining a person with different political views, or whether the action contravened human rights.

Earlier yesterday Ms Weerada also sought help from the European Union over the same charge of human rights violation.

The military authorities did not escort Mr Watana to the Criminal Court to report himself this morning to face criminal charges files against him under the Computer Crime Act for criticising the draft constitution and referendum.

His lawyer and former finance minister Kittirat Na Ranong were on hand to receive Watana at the court, but he didn’t show up.

Watana was reported to be in the military custody for attitude adjustment course at Army’s Surasi barrack in Kanchanaburi province.

His lawyer Narinpong Jinapak said he was told by the court official that the military has notified the Criminal Court that it detained Watana under the order of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and he will be escorted to the court to hear charges on April 25.

The military will allow the daughter and lawyer to visit him at the barrack tomorrow, he said.

One would think that being hauled in for Attitude Adjustment , anything under section 44 or restrictions of media information and freedom of speech , would constitute a breach of any human rights , then on the other hand the Junta keep assuring the international community , that they are on top of Human rights abuse within the fishing , labour and people trafficking area's , yet they treat anyone who opposes their point of view with disdain, to the point of paranoid phobia , hardly a good recommendation for human rights in Thailand.........................................

Yes, or someone like him. His current image is being laundered by the actions of the junta and he is given the opportunity to appear reasonable in the face of unreasonable actions taken against him. Can you not see him auditioning for the part of "opposition leader" at every stage managed press opportunity. He is enabled by Prayuth and his goon squad to take the position of putting the welfare of the country and the people in front of his own personal liberty and safety, and standing up bravely to oppression, however disingenuous that may be. In political terms he is running rings round the dinosaur brains that are trying to contain him. Even an Adolf Hitler could play the role he is being handed and come out with public sympathy at the end.

Seriously, all the country will need, today, tomorrow or next year, is a nucleus around which opposition can crystallise. If he turns out to be that nucleus, it will not matter whether he sponsored an unwise and unsuccessful amnesty bill.
