Reporting from the Mountains: CityNews takes a long drive through fires and barren hills

CityNews – Headed up into the mountains of Samoeng yesterday to see for ourselves what is going on with our environment and the results are worrying – fires, deforestation, drought and garbage.

We drove up Mae Sa Valley towards Mon Jam to take in the sweeping views. Passing the new Jungle Coaster, we found it ironic that the jungle seemed to have been cleared to make room for this new adventure land in Mae Rim.

As we drove past Mon Jam to a viewpoint, we encountered a vista highlighted by over ten fires, each with pluming columns of smoke.

What is so puzzling about this? CtyLife took some initiative and went out to report on what was happening in the hills around Chiang Mai.

Incidentally, isn't this the day when the General running the country was suppose to be doing his inspection tour of the north? I would have thought there would be efforts to stop the burning, at least for one day.

Yes, I know this is a Thai problem and has to be solved by the Thai people. But, we can still report on it can't we? And in fact, we should, so that other foreigners can make an informed decision prior to coming here about whether they want to subject themselves to these conditions.

I agree with what you say Nancy, however we must keep the story in perspective and not exaggerate as has happened if you open and read the link to the story. They talk about "dozens of terraced paddy fields" being dry and barren. I am not a rice farmer but am sure that paddy rice is not grown on terraces as shown in the picture, dry land rice would be grown in this situation which is planted at the beginning of the wet season and harvested by the time the wet ends.

really whats new????

the past decade or so have seen it over and over again

some years are better, others are worse, and will continue unitil E/S sprouts daisys

out in beverly hills ,maerim ,the culprits used to burn at dusk and after ,but now before dawn breaks, cunning as a sh#t house rats

no one gives a toss, , and my little bitch is a dot of a dot

its huge further north in all directions of the compass(from very reliable sources)

have always timed my run to my land down under, at burning time, to get some relief

if E/S could have that magic of hindesight, i would not have settled here full time, but from 2001 to say 2005 it was liveable ,and i made my bed to lay in and now except the present dangerous health conditions under duress

but to all ,

its a great life ,as long as you don,t weakensmile.png

There's no real news here, but the point of the article is understandable. I think the photo of a jungle amusement ride is interesting --- and that sort of development is really sad. It is a continuation of the bizarre amusement parks, some of them with illegal and drugged animals, and "fun parks" along the Samoeng Road near Mae Rim. What natural and cultural garbage!

I really don't understand the niggling back-and-forth of some of the posters above. Nothing was added by that.

ok then, the headline and photo were not in perfect harmony, as always you are correct.

The headline also states, "barren hills" the photo clearly shows a barren hillside. ...anyway N.Thailand is suffering from the triple whammy of drought, heat and ...humans.

... I also applaud City Life courage to alienate a potential advertiser... but maybe later a glowing article on how fun the coaster is, once the lanscaping is in place.

FG, click the link, there are many pics with the story.

For those who have the tenacity to go to the link.

The photo of the 3 men who appear to be tending their fire. One appears to be wearing uniform shoes and trousers. Not typical villager wear but maybe just helping out.

Thanks SpecSavers.
