That post is so unfair. Come on, the OP is desperate to grab a few cans himself.

Name the names.

Country?

Brand?

Outlet?

Or maybe you are afraid we'll have the whole of TV rushing out and buying up all your supply?

Most of the big supermarket chains have a deli section where they sell fresh cold cuts, you have some healthy alternaives to spam.

Thai made spam's gotta be worse than the US stuff.

Op needs to rephrase that - they have twigged to his favourite food. I can honestly say I have never, nor will I ever buy spam or beans, God forbid it should come to that.

For all you posters who are taking the mickey out of SPAM eaters. FYI Spam is actually shoulder ham. It has the unique quality of being a perfect food if you are on a Paleo or LCHF diets. It is a well balanced 30% FAT AND 70% PROTEIN. So much so it is the favourite food of mountaineers as its very compact and easy to carry and gives a high protein and high fat diet that is needed for the energy needed to climb mountains. I don't particular think it goes with eggs, and baked beans (one of my favourite foods) but is great with HP sauce in a sanger.

You're confused about what a paleo diet is about. I'm pretty sure the original paleo's weren't eating processed food loaded with sodium and preservatives.

HOPE beans . Big C , 30B and very nice , very tasty and very 'holesome .

Look at the net weight and where they come from.

Spam, I wouldn't feed that crap to my dog.

someone gave me 2 cans of it and I put it in a bowl for my dogs. they urinated on the bowl and walked away.

Its expensive not because of of Tax, but because of markup by importers to be honest.

I think you will find that it is both, with duty being the main part.

Yeah logistics and transport are free so they are not factored into the price either cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Yes, I also noticed in Makro that spam rose by about 25%, have stopped buying it now, always bring back a few tins of corned beef when I

go to Bangkok, but not from Villa, their prices for corned beef are really ridiculous.

I dont see any reason why imported items should not continue to be heavily taxed here. Thailand is a very protectionist country.

What gets me most here is not the price but the pathetic choice of items, even those that are made here.

But why heavily tax imported items that you have no interest in manufacturing yourself,I fail to see how this protects their own markets, this is what I could never understand.

I was in Cambodia and Vietnam recently and stood in awe at goods that I had not seen ever in my 7 years in Thailand.

It's not about protecting a non existent market, it's about balance of payments. Import tax is common in America and Europe, so why shouldn't Thailand use the same method to discourage the purchase of imported goods!

The other thing of course is that a specialist importer would be needed, as some products would have a very limited market. The low volume sales would mean that discounts wouldn't be available to the importers, which would inflate prices. There would also be a higher risk of write off on goods with a limited shelf life.

General question: Is there a store in Bangkok, or anywhere else, that sells imported expat goods? I know there is a place in Santa Monica that sells British products, is there anything like that in Thailand?

Villa Supermarkets have a range of imported expat products although fairly limited.eg Fray Bentos pies in tins. Barrs soft drinks. Corned beef etc etc.

Corned beef Villa, about 265 Bt, corned beef Foodland just down the road and round the corner, about 179 Bt. Same size tins.

Tops supermarket in Khon Kaen has boil in the bag kipper fillets, 199 baht for two pairs. Bought some last month, first time I've ever seen them there.

You can also get spam for around 180 baht in Makro, just depends which brand you buy.

Which Makros is that? I have been in a few Makros over the past few months, and the cheapest is about 235 Bt per tin.
