BANGKOK:-- The six youths arrested in the killing of a handicapped man in Bangkok on Sunday were denied bail and locked up yesterday.

Somkiat Srichan, 36, had been set upon on Sunday morning by a group of youths after he reportedly answered back to their teasing remarks about his leg handicap in front of the "Pang Horm" bread shop in Chok Chai 4, in the Lat Prao area of Bangkok, reports Manager Online

He died after being attacked with swords carried by the assailants who were passing on their motorcycles after a drinking session. Police called to the scene had to fire their weapons into the air after the gang refused to stop the assault, it was reported yesterday.

Police were successful in their application to the court to have bail denied and the six youths aged from 18 - 22 were remanded for twelve days. Police told the court of the horrific nature of the crime, the severe penalty if found guilty and the possibility that the men might flee, in their application to deny bail.

It was earlier reported that four of the youths are relatives of police.

Reports also emerged that relatives and lawyers for the accused are preparing bail money. The accused were remanded until the 14th as statements from many witnesses are prepared and the backgrounds of the youths are investigated.

In custody already, as should be.

RIP to the little toddler.

Still no word on actually laying charges against the speeding merc man who killed two students and still no news about charged being laid against the red bull boy.

And still no news about the community service charade of the arogant honda girl.

The chief of police and the 2IC now in charge of the first two cases for well over a month with close to no progress should be sacked on the spot and charged with dereliction of duty, at least.

Disgraceful...

In China, they would be quickly processed, paraded in front of the media with a sign around around their neck, taken out the back and shot. The difference in China, they know, if caught, they won't be getting away with it.

Unless they were the sons of party officials or PLA officers....then nothing would happen.

In the west (in the USA...same principle) if you know someone in high places...your set with expeonsive lawyers who likely can get you off or a very reduced sentence. And if THAT doesn't work...you can appeal to daddy's friends and get your sentence reduced as in this case:

Interesting to read all the typically cynical comments. based on absolutely nothing. All six involved, despite four of them being related to police, have been arrested and refused bail while evidence is gathered and the case prepared. How would they do anything different in your country? As for the police firing their guns in the air as a warning, which seems to have worked although too late to save the victim, maybe that happened as Thailand isn't the US where the police would no doubt have shot them all dead as they never appear to be skilled enough to shoot to disable. And how about the police being called and being there so quickly the assault was still taking place. Not bad at all.

Might have been better to shoot at the actual perpetrators instead of endangering others by firing into the air.

The "cynical comments" come from witnessing an awfully long list of recent cases where justice has been clearly the least concern meanwhile personal profiles would make the difference

Deserved comments in my opinion

The cynical comments aren't based on nothing. They are based on the fact that Thai authorities have a rich history of acting like they will proceed with a prosecution and losing momentum as soon as the outrage has died down.

Cops are taught to shoot at center mass for a number of reasons. First, it is the most likely to result in a hit. Second, you are still quite likely to die if shot in the leg due to these things called arteries that carry blood around the body (watch 'Blackhawk Down'). Third, America is the hub of lawsuits, and a dead guy can't sue.

As I said in my previous post, all firing into the air does is put more people at risk. The bullets should have been aimed at the little murderers.

Shooting into a group of thugs who are presently attacking a handicapped person...hmm...maybe too easy to hit the handicapped person ....maybe because this was a heavily populated area (just off of Lat Phrao Road)...ANY stray bullets would end up in someone's house....the police did the right thing as far as the shooting in the air. Let's hope the judiciary follows through.

I agree with everything you said except this bit: "as they never appear to be skilled enough to shoot to disable". Police are not trained to 'shoot to disable' ... that sort of thing only happens in the movies. They are trained to shoot for body mass, not arms or legs. At least that is the case in Canada (but I presume other places as well).

So wait a minute....they came and yelled slurs at him....tried to enter the shop....were pushed out....handicapped guy comes back inside and gets sword and chases them outside.....OK...very different story than first presented.

Handicapped Guy....attacks them with sword ......hmmmm.....not a smart move.
