Nine Cambodian men were arrested in Preah Vihear by Cambodian border police after allegedly crossing the border into Thailand’s Sisaket province to illegally harvest luxury Kranhuong trees near the Dangrek Mountains, according to Deputy Chief of Choam Ksan District Police, Captain Has Yuth.

The arrests were made near Preah Vihear temple in Choam Ksan district, he added, and happened on Tuesday night. The nine men, all Svay village residents, should consider themselves lucky, Capt. Yuth said. “It was very dangerous. If they would have ran into Thai soldiers, they would have been shot,” he said, adding that his officers arrested the men while they were smuggling 33 pieces of luxury timber into Cambodia.

Police seized the wood as well as two saws and five axes. All timber was destroyed, Capt. Yuth said.
