Cambodia’s exports to the United States, the second largest importer of local goods after the European Union, declined slightly during the first quarter of the year compared with the same quarter last year. Commerce officials said the decrease reflected a tightening of the American economy during the election campaign plus slow growth affecting consumption.

According to data from the United State Trade Office, total exports from Cambodia were more than $706 million in the first quarter of the year compared with more than $725 in the same period last year, a slight decline of about three percent. Seung Sophari, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Commerce, said the slight decrease did not come as a surprise as the US market is being slowed by the electoral campaigns and their economy is slow at the moment.

“As we are a small country that exports to the United States, whenever there is anything impacting the US economy, it will affect us, and right now they are conducting an electoral campaign too,” said Ms. Sophari. “It is the nature of the trade flow – when their economy is going well, their people will make spend more so they will send more orders to us.
