Need door knob deadbolt set with 70mm backset

In the building I live in they installed locks and deadbolts with a 70mm backset. I have been to all the home stores (i.e., HomePro, Boonthvorn, Thai Watsadu, etc.) and all they sell are 60mm backset. They say 60mm is Thailand standard. Does anyone know where I can get a door knob lock and deadbolt lock set keyed alike with a 70mm backset. In the U.S. all the locks come with adjustable backset (2-3/8" and 2-3/4" which correlate to the 60mm and 70mm backsets) but here in Thailand all I can find are 60mm. Many of the packages here say "adjustable" but the hardware in the package is fixed and not adjustable. I have no idea why this building was built with door locks with a non-standard backset for Thailand. I hope someone knows a specialty store that will have either a 70mm backset or adjustable.

First thing to try and do is to see if you can see the name of the manufacturer on the forend plate, sometimes its there, sometimes you may just have to remove the 2 grub screws and it maybe on the main latchplate.

you are more likely to get the longer backsets from one of the western companies, such as Hafele or Yale.

All the big stores stock these manufacturers but agree they are not the norm so cannot sell; otherwise go to the main hafele offices, they are in every city here and they can order for you.

Completely agree with your dilemma; I too have recently been scouring for door handles and locksets.. Personally I hate knobs and I am looking for lever sets.

what i have realised here is that the door stiles, whether they be on the plastic doors or timber glazed doors are often less than 95mm wide, so a 70mm will just run too deep.

a 60mm backset adds another 30mm with the rose, so it looks aesthetically crap when its up agin the leading door edge and a glazed opening, hence my preference for a vertical lever plate.

Another thing they do here is to reckon they makes the door stiles from ex 5 inch timbers; yes they do, but that gets planed down then UNLIKE the west they form one of the glazing beads from the whole timber section thus reducing the overall door stile to 95/90.

pretty sure thats why you cannot find 70mm backsets. unless you have a solid door or a a midrail at just the correct height then a 70mm is pretty obsolete here.

good luck with your quest,I will also be keeping a lookout for them.

The original lock manufacturer is BEN-HUR. Their offices are on Rama 3 and I went there. They said the Benhur locks are no longer sold and the brand now is "JARTON." They said they no longer sell 70mm backsets and have none to sell me. Yale is owned by Assa-Abloy (world's largest lock manufacturer) and I sent them an email asking about 70mm backset and they never replied. I will try to find my local Hafele office and check with them. Thanks for the info.

There's an outfit out of Oz-land that makes a real good lock set(I've bought 2 of them in Phayao, so they must be available all over), that is within those parameters. I believe the company is Wilco or something similar to that. Good luck....pg

The issue is not finding a good lock set. The issue is finding it with a 70mm backset. In Thailand the stores only sell 60mm backset.

What I am looking for is a standard knob and deadbolt that can go into a door that has a previous lockset on it.

Try this improbably named company:

http://www.skulthaiunited.com

I did. They had the hardware I wanted but quoted me almost 5,000 baht for a deadboit and almost 10,000 baht for an entry knob lock. These prices are way too expensive for what I want. Standard knob deadbolt sets run just under 1,000 baht to a few thousand baht. I checked with the building and they said the original developer bought all the hardware from Hong Kong, hence it not being to Thailand standard. I will have to wait until someone I know comes to Thailand who can bring me a set. In most other countries 70mm is common and the sets are usually adjustable. In Thailand everything in regular knob and deadbolt locks are fixed 60mm backset.

I would suggest you get a Thai person to contact them. The prices on their website are just a few hundred baht.

The locks are non-standard. They are Ansi 2 Schlage high security imported for a job they had. They checked and had some left over from the job. They won't sell them for a few hundred baht. These are not standard locks and the prices on their website do not apply. I simply passed on the quote.

Do you need another complete lock? Or do you want your lock changed for security reasons?

If you want the lock changed, could you get your existing lock rekeyed? (Not sure how you would secure your room in the meantime though!)

Nope. The deadbolt and knob do not match. Prior resident replaced the deadbolt but not the doorknob. The knob hardware is old and corroded and want keyed alike (right now have two keys). So rekeying is not an option. Need to buy new matching hardware.

As you have surmised you are going to have to purchase a complete set, since I have never seen just the parts available. In most cases in Thailand the sets are adjustable for either 60mm or 70mm. How you are going to key them alike might be accomplished by a professional locksmith

The web pages are used internationally. They don't sell hardware like that in Thailand. I've contacted all the xompanied. Regardless what their website says, 70mm backset is not sold here. Websites are useless.

HomePro has 60mm only. Been to several stores. Adjustable style hardware not sold in Thailand despite what websites say. Packages say adjustable, but hardware inside is cheaper fixed 60mm only.

So you have contacted Solo directly?

Yes, contacted several of the manufacturer's offices. They told me flat out that 70mm is not standard in Thailand and I will not find it in any stores. None of them sell them here. 60mm only is sold in Thailand.

So you contacted Solo the company that shows it on their packaging and asked if you could buy?

Yes that is international packaging in English. Used worldwide. The package is wrong. Only 60mm is sold here, period. I have given up. I will buy a new lockset the next time I travel abroad.

I know the thread is kinda outdated but lampang suggested one of the best ways dealing with it (not to mention buying new lockset abroad). I also used polyurethane once or twice. It wont harden your door but when burglar want to bump or pick a lock, no matter what the door is, you will most certainly be getting robbed.
