I know that in Thailand one needs a prescription to get most drugs such as antibiotics. Are there any pharmacies in Bangkok which have a doctor on staff who can write out a prescription?

Surely you're joking ?

Just pop into pretty much any pharmacy and buy whatever you want.

Sadly this is illegal in Thailand and discussion of such on TV usually results in posts such as yours being deleted or the thread being closed, that was certainly the case when I added similar comments only last week.

Still it's sensible advice none the less.

I think that depends on whether it's a controlled drug / what type of control is applied and what type of drug it is.

Pharmacists over here sell drugs like antobiotics (and that is what we're talking about here) all the time, they don't appear to be controlled in the same way that they are back in the west.

I know a guy who gets his asthma inhalers without a prescription, people who get insulin without a prescription, beta blockers, diabetes tablets, statins, etc, etc, etc.

Indeed another reason many antibiotics no longer work, they dish them out willy nilly in Thailand like packets of sweets.

I had an ear infection once and was given no less than 6 different tablets to take 4 times a day utterly ridiculous.

In this instance the OP doesn't even state the required drug, that would be advantageous in answering his question properly.

Are you in a rural area?

The efficacy of the meds is related to the range of tablet colours and shapes in the unmarked plastic baggie that the doctor gives. Covers more bases that way.

the Thai generic Viagra is going to be 100% real, but maybe 1 pharmacy in 3 will sell without a script,or carry it at all. Pfizer lost their patent on Viagra several years ago (it actually expired)...so it's 100% legit...the price of Sdagara is set by the government, so there are still rogue pharmacies that prefer to sell the Indian stuff..Konagra or something like that...expect to pay 4x more...Viagra 10 X more, and it has a far greater chance of being fake. Thai GPO is well trusted. 4 x 50mg for 120...4 x 100mg for 220...or thereabouts....anything else is a farang ripoff.

as far as antibiotics..for an ear infection....Pfizers Zithromax is about 6 x 500mg for 5-600 thb. You can take a single dose of 4 x 500mg...really good stuff...but you have to buy six....but Thai GPO has Zithromoxcina (close to it) wich is the same thing and is maybe 170 for 6 x 500. Look for a middle of the road pharmacy with an englsih speaking pharmacist....let them show you the name brand...then ask about the Thai generic...most will be happy to show you, and couldn't care less which one you buy. Poison Ivy cream..German stuff 5 usd...Thai stuff 90 cents...and she showed me item by item, how it was same same...it was a miracle cure.

I think he's extracting the Michael ??

Pharmacies in Thailand are an abundance of chemicals on sale as you've implied.

A kind of copious drug market for freelance junkies. Prescriptions are just an inconvenience in these places because you cut out the middleman unfortunately- the Doctors

Just saying ..,..,

If you need a controlled drug (something that can be abused) you generally have to go to a hospital for a prescription, I believe it also needs to be filled in the hospital pharmacy.

bs...narcotics are strictly controlled....try to get any opiate...or even most opioids...Tramadol, maybe...1/10 as strong as morphine, but no junkie will be the least interested in it. Go back to your NGO or whatever sensationalist' crap your reading; reality is a lot different.

As you know this is LOS so the probabilities are endless if you really was in need of such meds. Although, must admit not seen that many junkies walking about looking out their face as we have strutting up and down our high streets in the UK.

As partially said already there are different classes of pharmaceuticals in Thailand and the availability of each class carries different controls - in part this includes:

OTC (over the counter) medications include antibiotics (and many drugs typically requiring a prescription in the West) are freely available without constraint.

Some restricted/controlled substances can only be sold where there is a fully licensed Grade A Pharmacist on the premises.

Mild opiate type drugs such as Tramadol require the customer to sign a register and the presence of a Grade A Pharmacist.

Drugs such as Cialis and other ED meds. require a prescription from a licensed doctor.

The final classification is drugs that are only available from a hospital.

Exceptions to the above will always exist otherwise this wouldn't be Thailand - it's also not uncommon also for pharmacies to sell counterfeit copies of some restricted or prescription drugs, particularly in the tourist areas.

fair assessment, except that Tramadol is not anywhere near an Opiate. True ED Meds are maybe a little bit easier to get than Tramadol..a mild Opioid.
