Footage from a car dashboard camera shows the moment Prapot Kaewpila fell to the ground and was hit by a truck Tuesday night in Nonthaburi.

NONTHABURI — A 23-year-old competitive cyclist was killed during a night ride in a Bangkok suburb last night.

Prapot Kaewpila was trying to speed through a small opening between a truck and motorcycle at the entrance of Soi Pracha Chuen 9 when he hit the motorbike. Both its rider and Prapot went down, and as dashboard cam footage from another vehicle showed, Prapot’s head was immediately run over by the truck. He died instantly.

For those of you who ride anything on two wheels, this video shows how fast sh*t happens. One reason I ALWAYS hang back and never try to thread a needle like this guy did.

I know he was training and wanting to keep moving but not worth it. RIP bicycle man.

"Prapot Kaewpila was trying to speed through a small opening between a truck and motorcycle..."

Always a potential suicide move. Since, in most cases the drivers of motor vehicles don't signal if they are moving into a lane, or look in their side/rear view mirrors to be aware if there are other vehicles near them. When there are 2 vehicles involved, there are two irresponsible drivers to contend with.

When I ride my bicycle, I stay near the curb. At least I know that curb won't pull a bone head move. Then I only have to be concerned about one imbecile making a stupid move. Also, I have noticed that Thai drivers avoid driving near curbs, thus giving me more space to maneuver.

In general, when driving, motorcycling, bicycling, jogging and even walking--Thais leave very little margin for error. Constantly, they cut in front of me, allowing insanely narrow margins for safety.

Even at a running track, I have lost count of how many have sharply cut in front of me, and then tangled up with my feet and took a tumble to the ground. All because they couldn't estimate a safe distance.

It's strange. And often tragic.

Was he wearing a helmet?

Dr Henry Marsh is probably England's # 1 neurosurgeon is also a keen cyclist - but he never wears a helmet because he says it's a waste of timeohmy.png

Helmets...bicycle or motorcycle, are not meant to avoid head injuries in a crash. They are designed for the purpose minimizing injuries resulting from a vehicle going down at a slow speed. Many deaths result from what appears to be a fairly light cranial impact, which could have been cushioned by a helmet.

I went over the handlebars on mine recently and my head, hand, knees all hit the ground. My head and hands were protected. My knees weren't. Guess which part of me was bleeding heavily?

What you have there is a man with an opinion. I don't agree with it.

I find it hard to feel sorry for people who do incredibly stupid things and then pay - sometimes the ultimate - serious consequences.

I do feel sorry for a wife or children he may have left behind. Hopefully he was single and childless.

Taking stupid chances pretty much goes along with being 23, IME anyways

Was he wearing a helmet?

Obviously not as he died, if he was wearing abit of magic hard foam at the top of his head he would of survived a few tonnes rolling over his head and body no problems

From watching the video it appears that the lorry driver didn't even notice the accident happen therefore he is not responsible in any way. Running over a person's head would be like running over a water melon, unnoticeable.

Certainly would be in instances like this where a truck ran over his head. Terrible accident but no helmet would've made a difference.

Well, the lorry did a good hop with the rear axle, the lorry has mirrors where the fallen motorcycle (with light) should be visible.

In this case I doubt that he has not noticed.

Also I doubt that the cyclist hit the motorbike.

More looks like the motorcyclist wanted to slowly move left and suddenly noticed and was surprised by the bicycle.

Sudden move and slipped.

Lucky escape for the motorcyclist.

What a silly maneuver by the bicyclist.

Driving a bicycle on the main path of a busy Thailand road at night is pure foolishness from the start blink.png

No light on the bicycle if I am right.

I'm stunned that ANYONE would ride a bike on the open road, given the notorious driving habits of Thais...sorry, but the guy was asking for an accident, and he found one...

ironically, a gym membership would have saved the guy's life...and the cost of said membership will probably be the fine assigned to the driver the killed him...

It would certainly have been a waste of time in this case.

However in many cases it will save lives.

Just because he is a professor and a neurosurgeon doesn't mean he is right. It is just an opinion.

Well...I have a couple of dings on my helmet that says a helmet is not a waste of time. What has time go to do with it anyway? Thirty seconds to put on your helmet is to protect your head.
