NRSA’s Alongkorn: Rumors on assembly’s end of term, untrue

BANGKOK, 19 May 2016 (NNT) – A vice president of the National Reform Steering Assembly has denied rumors, which claim the assembly’s term is coming to an end soon.

NRSA’s First Vice President Alongkorn Ponlaboot confirmed that the term of the assembly remains in accordance with the stipulation in the amended 2014 Provisional Constitution.

Mr. Alongkorn said that rumors about the approaching end of the NRSA’s term could have been the work of some ill-intentioned groups, which has been common.

Were the NRSA to be disbanded soon, he said the reform of education would possibly be the only mission to have been completed.

Nevertheless, he stated that the NRSA will continue its reform work, which has seen a lot of progress due to collaboration with other members of the Fiver Rivers, including the National Legislative Assembly, the National Council for Peace and Order, the Constitution Drafting Commission and the Cabinet.

Such rumor is based likely on the hope that once again an elected government can pursue the agenda of the majority.

As Alongkorn points out - that is false.

Combined with the NCPO-appointed (and most likely occupied by military, former military pro-royalists and family members) Senate, the NRSA will continue to exist for the so-called five year transition period (or longer of necessary) to assure completion of the NCPO agenda. No elected government will be able to alter NRSA's agenda given the existence of such a shadow government (aka Deep State).

I think you have identified the gist of the strategy. Perpetuate control while maintaining a semblance of democracy.

I recall when the 1st Draft Charter was voted down by the "old" national Reform Council, and it was noted that many of the military members voted against the Charter. In hindsight, it is apparent that the 1st Draft did not go far enough in securing the necessary control by unelected institutions; so I am assuming the down vote was orchestrated. The solution was crafted in the middle of the 2nd drafting process, when the 5 year transition period was invented out of thin air, the CDC went through a little face-saving show of concern, and the Junta got what it wanted.

The deck is truly stacked. The referendum is merely an opinion poll. The Deep State is prevailing, thanks in part to a citizenry that is remarkably patient. However, tipping points are called tipping points for a reason...
