After the death of a patient, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday it would close Toul Kork’s Khim Rany Clinic, saying the private clinic did not adhere to ministry standards or regulations. “The Minister of Health has decided to close the Khim Rany Clinic, located in Boeung Kak 1 commune, Toul Kork district, Phnom Penh, because it has caused [many] problems...and did not abide by its contract when applying for a license to open and does not follow instructions from the Ministry of Health,” Health Minister Mam Bunheng said in a statement.

The statement did not give an explicit reason for the clinic’s closure, and Health Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann could not be reached for additional comments. However, the announcement to close the Khim Rany Clinic follows the death of 28-year-old Lam Tao Kong on Sunday. Mr. Tao Kong sought treatment from the private health facility after falling ill while eating at a restaurant. He was given two painkiller injections by Khim Rany Clinic staff on Sunday morning.

“My husband, who did not feel well, went to buy rice for me. At about 7:43pm, he called me and said he could not get back home because he had back pain and could not drive. He also said he was at Khim Rany Clinic,” Mr. Tao Kong’s newly married wife, Sok Rath Mony, posted on Facebook on Sunday night. Ms. Rath Mony said she rushed to the clinic but when she arrived just after 8pm her husband was nowhere to be found. When she called his cellphone, an unfamiliar voice answered it, telling her her husband had died of a heart attack on the way to Calmette Hospital.

After the death of a patient, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday it would close Toul Kork’s Khim Rany Clinic, saying the private clinic did not adhere to ministry standards or regulations.

Tip for the Ministry of Health: starting checking clinics pro-actively and close them down if they don't meet standards instead of waiting till someone dies to pay them a visit.
