I have True Internet service at my home. It is the 30mb/3mb plan. Up until about 60 days ago I could connect to the USA via Strong VPN and have at least a 25-28mb connection to San Francisco. My account with Strong is setup correctly.

Now it's 0.5mb...Is True blocking access to VPN servers? If so is there anyway around it?

Thank you for any advice offered.

Perhaps it is your VPN rather than True. My current test using LA. Normally best results as using Singapore as below (once in Singapore there are good connections everywhere).

Edit: True does have a fair use policy so if you have been downloading more than about 4gig an hour speeds will be greatly reduced.

I am on a True online 50/5 connection and have a open VPN that connects via a server in California. The VPN is the IP that starts with 54. It does not appear the VPN is blocked. It might be the server you are connecting to in the US.

Here are some tests with and without the VPN.

I'm with True, a 15Mb DOCSIS/cable plan here in Bangkok, and use StrongVPN service. Works fine "now", repeat, now. However, but, about two weeks ago I had the same "really slow" StrongVPN service. Turned out to be a StongVPN slow server problem and not a True problem.

Now although I can change server locations myself under this particular older (but low cost) plan San Francisco and Los Angeles was my only choices on the west coast of the U.S. and I just didn't change servers myself to see if I could clear up the problem. So, I just submitted a trouble ticket and within 30 minutes I got an email response...I replied back...got another email back in a few minutes as the problem was being worked....we did several emails back and forth over an hour or so as they gave me server StrongVPN San Francisco VPN server links to speedtest to, I sent them back emails identifying the speed test result by server, then they switched me to the server that gave me the fastest speedtest result and the problem was fixed. I ended up being on their number 22 SF server (sf22); previously I was on sf15.

Regarding the back and forth emails with StrongVPN below is a partial quote from one of their emails as we were doing the speedtesting. You just click on a link and it opens up the "Mini Speedtester" to run a speedtest. Run it with VPN "off." Don't rely on just "one" speedtest to each server, refresh your browser page and run a couple of times to get an average to each server as the Mini-Speedtest only runs a test for a few seconds and results can vary very significantly from test to test--it's not a very good speedtest but good enough for the type of quick testing were were doing.

At the time only 2 of the 6 below links gave good speeds. Now, the StrongVPN website will say all their servers at any locationn are closely monitored for speed, none are overloaded, all provide basically the same speed, blah...blah...blah. But all I know is my testing of the six servers below at San Francisco (and StrongVPN has many more servers than below at SF...these are just the half dozen they asked me to test to...SF15 was my current sever giving slow speed) result in greatly different speedtest results. I expect all the servers were in the same building...maybe even the same rack.

You can see in your StrongVPN logon credentials what server you are on...just look for the number right after the vpn-. Like above sf15, sf17, etc....expect if you were on one of their Los Angeles servers it would be la15, la17, etc. When doing the speedtesting to above servers I even entered some server numbers not listed and go results because they have several hundred servers at San Francisco alone.

By the way, just before posting this I did a speedtest to all above sf servers with vpn off. I ran the test "twice" on each server. sf22, 30, and 90 gave me over 10Mb speed on my 15Mb plan...the others were only a couple of Mbs. Your results may vary. Implies to me maybe all their servers are not closely monitored for similar speeds, not overloaded, etc...and then again maybe the problem is some other mystical, magical internet thing.

Also if you are using Wifi, be sure you have a strong and stable signal as VPN is sensitive to funky connections.

By the way, I think I'm going to give PIA a try which appears to have a good, low cost VPN plan right now...will probably sign up in early June. That way I can test it for a few months before my early August subscription to StrongVPN comes due. Crossfeed with one very helpful ThaiVisa member (lopiburi3) indicates he's been getting good service and speed...and reviews of PIA seem pretty good also although it has some haters. Although StrongVPN is one of the oldest VPN service providers, maybe it's time to change if I can get just as good or better service at a lower price from another service provider.

Joe, what program are you using that produces that kind of info for display?

Thank you for the replys.

Strong unlocked my drop down menu and I tried just about all the cities available.

Best download speed was New York, around 18-20 mbs.

My most reason for the VPN was for Netflix content from the USA, however now it won't let me... it always did before...I am aware they are continuing to stop VPN's. Got the "Proxy Detected" message.

Thank again...Cheers

Oookla speed test by clicking on "MY Results" and then clicking on "Export Results" which downloads them as a XL file. I then opened the file and edited the IP addresses. What I posted was a screenshot since doing a copy and paste does not display correctly.

I believe true is blocking. You need to check this.

There are hundreds of these bestvpn or toptenvpn comparison sites out there all rating one provider over others - they're usually paid for favourable reviews by the providers or the providers actually set them up.

You'll get a better idea of who's good if you look at torrent forums

That said, Strongvpn are crap. They keep logs of absolutely everything and will pass on your details to any official-sounding body that requests them.

Furthermore, when I last used them a couple of years back, you had to pay to switch servers if you went over 5 switches a year.

I'm skeptical that True could block VPNs. They'd have to block domains one by one - no-one can distinguish types of https traffic without decrypting it.

Some members have posted things in past about Thai ISPs doing man-in-the-middle attacks and then do forenics on the data, but this is far to sophisticated and expensive. True would need a trillion baht and a data center bigger than siam paragon to do this to everyone.

FWIW, I have True DOCSIS (cable) internet and I have both Strong and PureVPN and neither seem to be blocked or restricted in any way.
