Those who wish to drink themselves into oblivion can do it on the "7" steps or in their room .

What is it that drives some to "clubs" etc where getting pie eyed is that much more expensive ? Maybe these people are the famous 2 week "millionaires"

I don't drink alcohol but I still like to go out well past midnight and socialise.

For some of us a fun life doesn't consist of sitting on thaivisa correcting people over terminology like 'visa on arrival', 'retirement visa', etc. every single day.

Sounds like someone has suffered some loss of face for failing to understand a few fairly basic terms, the understanding of which would make a difference to those posing questions about immigrations issues.

Viva partying past midnight. Viva ignorance.

Calm down, minister. Or is it "cheap charlie"? Either way, many normal, social beings like to go to places where like-minded individuals congregate to imbibe spirits, have conversation, and listen and dance to music. Your "contribution" to this thread does nothing to advance the conversation or answer the OP's question. I suggest you take your negative grumbling--or is it argumentative trouble-making?--elsewhere.

Agree. OP asked a legit question and this member's reply is indicative of too many posts on TVF. Might also note he's been active on TVF just over 2 months. 1,855 posts (average 30 posts/day) might suggest he's got little else to do with his life at the moment.

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything.

NCPO made it clear hours of operation for bars would be strictly enforced a long time ago. I'm aware of recent events where 3-4 plain silver vans have raced up to a few bars, unloaded 40+ Army personnel (full camouflage combat utilities w/weapons), tracked down owners/managers, informed them they will be back, and if open after 12 midnight they will be arrested.

If happening at any level of frequency elsewhere in LoS, I'd say it could have impact on OP's question.

If you want to party all night, come to Samui...tongue.png

And you could even surprise your friends by ending up dead on the beach in the morning.

I think less and less people are partying compare to 10 years ago, this is speaking of nightlife in Bangkok. Perhaps its because there are so many bars and drinking holes that clubs are rarely packed. And the fact that there are no new clubs around town for sometime already. But ever since the red shirt protests, I've noticed people prefer to hit the bars for a couple of drinks and call it a night. Or that many younger folks seems to be drinking at friends apartments nowadays.

I think you mean -

Since the suppression of the democracy protestors and the coup, the temporary curfew , the clearing of the vendors off the street, police stop and search, urine testing - yeah less people go out but it's since the yellow shirt coup not the red shirt protests. Big difference.

No it was since the red shirt (UDD) in 2009-1010, because the red shirt pretty much closed down the city, not to mention monthly bombings around the city that ruined the whole mood. Then all hell broke loose when the army moved in. Big difference if you get the order of events right.

I was out partying at a local thai disco until 5am the other night in Thalang Phuket. Phuket town has a couple spots open until 3am (thai disco) and Patong can also go into 4-5am as well. If you want late night party action its better to go to the party locations and not the laid back places. You want Bangkok, Pattaya, Patong, Koh Phangan (full/new moon) or Phi Phi Island... not sure about Koh Samui... havent been there yet in my 5 years in the country.

"DISCO", really? I mean really? tongue.png

In reality I find it a load of drunken idiots carefully choosing which hooker to take home through their beer googles, while shouting (over the music) into each others ears drunken crap like "she's got great tits". Later followed by a drunken swagger home (hooker in arm) hopefully avoiding being mugged and perhaps leaning over and emptying your stomach on the pavement that you spent so much money filling before you arrive back at your condo and get robbed by your carefully chosen hooker.

So why are you there to witness it? Or is it all in your imagination?

They might not close down in Pattaya but the bars are dead with very few customers

this low season. I feel bad for the ladies and the bar owners. sad.png

Well, I don't stalk drunken men if that's what you're suggesting giggle.gif

I have seen all of the above bar the muggings, so pretty safe to piece together the event from start to finish.

You disagree I take it?

Nonse loads of places open until 5am - In Bangkok at least.... It all depends who owns the establishment and how much they pay off the police. Need to ask the creatures of the night and they will tell your pal whats what.

I notice a worldwide push to close drinking venues

early to stop crime, fights etc,, i agree, why drink

so much, is it really so much fun to wake up in the

gutter / hospital / toilet etc.

So you go out for a coffee and home by 10 ? I guess a friend told you that, Just enjoy what you do, everybody enjoys different things,, but the discos are full of guys having a fun night,, sometime what you say happens,, usually just once to most of us, before we know how to tell which ones are the ladyboys.... I have met some lovely woman here from the bars,, maybe if there was welfare and free houses to them like in the west, they wouldn't be working in the bars ??

I'm guessing you are so far past "youth" that you forget what it is to have your life ahead of you. Your crotchety inquiries suggest that while many are still playing to win, you are well into the end game.

The goal is not to drink yourself into oblivion, but then again that is something you seem to have forgotten.

Youth it seems is not wasted on the young.

I think the army backed yellow shirts occupied the airport first - Precipitating a coup then election then coup. It was after the airport occupation that the police started closing down bars early in NP. I was there - however it should be said that Taksin started the war on fun and late hours. During the red shirt democracy demonstrations I got around OK but during the YS occupation of junctions at Asoke and Suk I saw with my own eyes bullying of people by tough with knives and steel bars. The same thugs who occupied the airport made the city ungovernable. Exactly why, when the subject is 'Thai night life' you choose to introduce a revisionist view of events to criticise a spurned electorate is a nonsense and unhelpful response.

I am still puzzled why people are still heading to Thailand or even consider it for nightlife, man it sucks to hell, boring music and DJs, clubs closing early, police harassment and humiliation, had a friend who were humiliated by a police search recently, dozens of many other destination have much more superior nightlife then Thailand, even boring Taiwan is getting more appealing, Indonesia is a million times better with Bali and Jakarta !! Cambodia and the Philippines have great nightlife and cheaper booze and women.

Could be matter of taste, or coming the wrong places...

PADs occupation of the airport had no impact on the night life, it wasn't even close to town! Not only that, they were camped out near the government house most of the time. Whereas the red shirts were in the middle of Bangkok, Silom, Ratchadamri, Rama 4 to name a few. UDD's occupation of downtown involved weekly bombings and shootings of businesses.

in 2013 PDRC took over town, but it was relatively peaceful, there were no bombings. Bombing is the major thing keeping people from going out. You don't have to agree with me, I will happily prefer sticks and knives overs bombs thrown randomly at bts stations and businesses around town. You can PM me if you would like to discuss and debate more regarding to the events.

I believe that part of the problem is that the group of permanent foreign residents that have supported the bars in Pattaya for the last 15 or 20 years is getting old with many suffering from bad health as well. Dark side bars are mostly empty in the afternoons now with 2 or 3 customers considered a crowd. Tour buses do not impact night life out here and bars and cafes open and close with regularity. Some like Fabrice and Aqua Deymie have pools and poolside rooms and decent food and maybe as much as 30 or 40 million baht in their investment. Still hard to make a living these days. Not much improvement expected either.

I agree, not only that, there seems to be less expats due to the economy. For example Chevron is cutting 800 jobs in Thailand this year, a friend of mine who teaches at ISB says that over 100 students will be gone next year, that is just from one school alone whose parents work in one company!. In Bangkok, there are so many new places opening almost monthly, people have too many choices nowadays, competition is stiff.

There is still life in Pattaya though the number of tourists are low.

People even used to laugh from KL-Malaysia but man it has improved dramatically during the last 4 years, many interesting clubs are open until 6am, some got entire foreign bands from south America and Philippines playing great music, even women offers rival that of Thailand, I dont want to talk about Cambodia-Indonesia because Thailand is lagging behind for sure, Pattaya is just overrated that 's it, Batam, ,Bali or Sihanoukville is Superior to my opinion, angeles is also not too bad.

no good weed and clubs closing at 2am and sometimes 1am, gov here don't want you to go out they r just shy to say it straightforward, in Indonesia or Cambodia you got your order at the table a like a king and the police take you back home like a king no body harass you, inflation is created by idiots who refuse to explore nearby places, give your money to the people who needed the most.

So you're checking at a time when activities are low key at best, and will check more on a day when all nightlife will be closed.

Sounds like a reliable overview.
