My girlfriend would like to join the gym in Bangkok. Only requirement here is she needs a trainer as she is a newbie. Not really looking for private trainer. Just need a gym which will provide her with gym routine of weight loss and someone who can guide her how to do exercises

She weights around 80 KG and she would like to lose 20 KG more which is idea for her health

Any good recommendations? She tried the New Moves in bangkok but that is a bit expensive(5k THB per month)

Such a considerable weight loss may not only require a gym instructor, but very likely a professional dietitian.

Changes in body weight, of course, are not merely a matter increasing calorie burning, but a careful control of the calorie intake. Any drastic dieting will usually not work and needs a dedicated (knowledge-based) long term approach instead.

Good luck. Hope other people will recommend a suitable gym with good instructors.

Are there hospitals with obesity clinics? Here in Chiang Mai, Sripat Hospital has an "obesity clinic" which combines very well guided exercise sessions supervised by a physio-therapist with regular visits to a nutritionist and M.D. Cost is 9000 baht for three months, plus the cost of a basic health screening if you haven't had one recently (about 6000 baht). They use the fitness center that is also the fitness center for Sripat employees, with regular equipment like they have an a standard fitness center.

I've been using the "obesity clinic" at Sripat Hospital now for about three months (I really hate that name and in my case they should now call it the "overweight clinic" since I no longer meet the criteria for being "obese") I've lost 8 kg in three months and really appreciate having a physio-therapist standing by, taking my blood pressure at key points during the workout and reminding me about correct form when I'm using the free weights.

I've gone to glitzier fitness centers at hotels a few times during these three months and realized I could fall over dead and no one would notice. All the staff worries about is if you're going to break the machines.

Agreed. That amount of weight loss, if she is serious about doing it and doing it efficiently, and wants help, she needs more than a gym. She could try a dietician or health clinic. I know Bangkok Hospital has a program I heard of but can not vouch for:

https://www.bangkokhospital.com/index.php/en/diseases-treatment/weight-management-program-services

Looks like they will do a proper check up (from point of view of weight loss) and go through guidelines on what to eat and what exercises to have. I expect they also have follow-ups, etc.

Once she has a program she only has to then find a good nearby gym with trainer who is happy to follow the suggestion on the program to make sure she does the routine correctly.

The keys to success for her would be some boring and basic things:

1) Stick to a routine, every day, for a year or so (it should take about 1 year to loose that weight in a healthy fashion)

2) If you miss a day, don't abort. Keep going.

3) Understand it will take a while (no miracles!)

4) Watch what you eat -- Oodles of cook books out there on 'clean food'. Low calorie, high nutrients.

5) Find an exercise routine you don't hate and can do happily every day (2 hour on the treadmill, or cycling, or stair master, or combination).

Weight training is a great way to help loose weight in addition to cardio, but *I* personally wouldn't jump into any serious weight training regiment until she's got a month or two of cardio under her belt. If only to get 'used' to the idea of regularly exercising. This is where a trainer can join in to make sure she does the routine correctly.

After that, if she's got the motivation and interest, she can start looking at classes for exercises (Spinning, Zumba, Yoga, Etc. Lots of choices, esp. at big clubs like Fitness FIrst). This would be a good way to 'mix' it up. But remember: Zumba once a week won't loose weight. Cardio & Weight Training & Active Life Style & Healthy Eating will loose weight :)

Jay birds post is pretty much bang on.

I would say gym (physical) would only be about 10 percent of weight loss, the other 90 percent is purely mental. It's a mental game being able to count calories and stick to a regimented routine and especially manage to do it all around a busy life style.

Best advice, of course join a gym or do some form of cardio every day, but what really matters is spending time coming up with a sensible (and achievable) diet plan. Every person is different and what works for some may be horrendously difficult to follow for others. What's most important is that your wife will be able to stick to it and not go insane.

Remember loosing weight is basic math (forget all obscure things that people say about how internal bodies function). At the end of day if you eat less calories than you consume each day; you will loose weight.

Most people agree that 1 or 2 lb per week is a good target (women id say 1). Any more and you risk developing loose skin, any less and you won't notice results fast enough to stay motivated.

Last thing, it is very common to loose a lot of weight in first week or so of new diets. Something to do with water loss. So basically expect to see something like 5 lbs lost in first week or so and then it will stable out.

Use an online calculator to work out calories required for wife. Then minus 500 Cals each day and only eat that.

Get her to weigh herself at same time each day and write it down (usually first thing in morning after toilet).

Good luck
