Terrible news - how many more have to die before the greedy politicians in America start to defend the people instead of taking the NRA blood money.

I think a better question would be how many lives have to be ruined before America guarantees health care, including mental health care, to all their citizens?

Exactly...banning guns is just a stupid idea...the guy here obviously had mental health issues...perhaps a stalker or schizophrenic who harbored delusions about the singer...

opposing guns outright, rather than offering reasonable legislation is akin to banning cars because drunk drivers kill people...

besides, with regards to the USA...there are far too many illegal guns already in circulation...banning them would only mean that the already armed criminals are more lethal...most research that goes beyond simple statistics indicates that the safest communities are the ones that are better armed...criminals tend to avoid homes that have security systems and guns in favor of easier targets...perhaps, one day, when the illegal guns are somehow removed from society it may be possible to have more reasonable gun control...but at this point, it just means that people will be more defenseless....

Then he should not have a gun

RIP to a promising young life cut short. So sad!

I don't even think the NRA would disagree with that.

But how would you identify those too sick to have a gun, and how would you keep them from accessing guns? Because, with hundreds of million of guns already out there- in the hands of good people, sick people and downright despicable people, no law in the world would have kept him (or any criminals, either) from getting one. And if the health care system isn't adequate to identify and treat mental illness, how would anyone know he shouldn't have access to one- because that's already illegal?

Had he been on appropriate meds, this may have never happened.

Weirdly, another much worse shooting also in Orlando:

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/06/12/us/orlando-nightclub-shooting/index.html

I expect it will be a dedicated new thread here soon, or it should be.

Now reported at least TWENTY dead at a gay nightclub.

They are not ruling out Islamic State terrorism. But it could also be Christian fundamentalist terrorism. Apparently it was well organized so perhaps not just a lone madman.

For sure it's a difficult proposition, and the perp if indeed had mental problems, should had being under proper care. But just because it is a difficult proposition it does not men we should not try.We will get all of them ? Certainly not. But we will get Many of them and the Right to life is not only limited to the unborn or subordinate to the right to bear arms

"Approximately 20 dead, 42 injured".

With no disrespect intended, there will be political consequences if it turns out to be Islamic terrorism or domestic/anti-gay terrorism.

It's weird that the credible people are ALREADY suggesting a strong chance of terrorism. I really don't get why yet. Talking about the MASS shooting with 20 or so dead. It's not unheard of for a lone wolf madman to do such things. So it seems the authorities may know more than they're saying.

That would be HUGE, Islamic State terrorists going after USA gay nightclubs.

I think the consequences would be more significant if it's Islamic State. Domestic hate groups, that isn't really that new or surprising. There have been such attacks on gay clubs before by such people.

Islamic state hitting domestic soft targets like that with massive casualties ... that's indeed would be really HUGE.

Sorry about the thread hijack, but you gotta admit the mass shooting in the same city, maybe Islamic terrorism, is a massively bigger news event.

Indeed. If it turns out to be Islamic/ISIS then Donald Trump's campaign will get a huge boost. If it turns out to be domestic Christian/anti-gay action, Clinton's gun control ideas will receive a boost.

The problem is, politicians, particularly Republican politicians will not consider "reasonable legislation". All are bought and paid for by the NRA which is no longer a citizens rights organization but a wholly owned subsidiary of the US gun industry. Today, 50 dead and as many wounded in Orlanda, killed by an American who law enforcement had already interviewed due to his ties to terrorists. Got guns, ammo, killed and wounded a hundred people. The President complained recently and rightfully so that someone can be on the "no fly list", an not allowed to travel by aircraft due to links to terrorist organization but may still legally purchase not only a gun, but as many guns as that person would want.
