National Film Board decides against screening foreign films bound for festival

BANGKOK, 14 June 2016 (NNT) - The National Film Board has resolved not to screen foreign films scheduled to air at a film festival this month.

Deputy Prime Minister Thanasak Patimaprakorn chaired a meeting of the National Film Board which decided to refrain from examining the films to be launched at the upcoming film festival.

Five films in question are scheduled to be aired during the Singapore Film Festival 2016 from June 15-19 at SF World Cinema, Central World, Bangkok, free of charge.

The meeting also discussed amending the laws to better suit film making industry and support foreign film-making firms which might shoot a movie in Thailand.

Why were the foreign films banned?

Is this part of the strategy to attract foreign film makers to Thailand?

Genius move.

I found this confusing but I think it may mean they aren't going to be screened to check them rather than they are banned.

Possibly.

Afraid of better quality, better made competition ?

If foreign guests are invited to attend it might be nice if they declined.

Ah, yeah, I think you're right.

That makes much more sense.

Or just could it be that once the foreign films will be screened, the local films will pale in compassion to the

non locals, and thus by not showing them, loss of face is avoided.....

As stated it means the films WILL be shown, but they WON'T be checked. This is the only reading of the whole article that makes sense. The confusion arises from ambiguity in the meaning of "screening/ to screen" in the headline and first paragraph, which can mean "show" or "check". Whether that ambiguity is deliberate (as click bait) or just bad reporting, is a moot point.

always look on the bright side....etc. Maybe, just maybe, there is a loosing up of the attitude about how the implication of censorship results in a less than stellar foreign film contingent. A return to pre-junta thinking gives a message that a more broad content, is welcome - resulting in a better festival, for future years. Just saying.

Now that you've got that sorted can you explain why the Singapore film festival is being held in Thailand? smile.png

So truth is Thailand is not going to censor the films, they'll leave that to the Singaporean censors and accept whatever they, the Singaporeans, pass.

Hardly an improvement really.

I've a feeling that they've either seen them already or had some trusted flunky see them, It's not like the military mind to approve something unseen!! Not at all dissimilar to Singapore! wink.pngthumbsup.gifwai.gif
