BANGKOK: The government-promoted sidewalk and canal market in front of Government House, officially called "Talad Klong Phadung Krungkasem" is lively today with more merchandises and activities are held.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand yesterday launched what it called the ‘Viciously Delicious and Hearty Appetite’ food campaign at the canal market to coincide with the weekend holidays.

According to TAT deputy governor for marketing communications, Mr Sukri Sitthiwanich, the main theme of the event is foods and produces from the central and southern provinces of Thailand.

The event is slated to last up to June 24.

He said he Klong Phadung Krungkasem market would be full of the vibrant colors and smells of the various produces and foods brought in from all the provinces in the country.

Well known foods, sweets and produce from the central and southern provinces have been given pride of place in the event. These range from ‘krajood’ a traditional cylindrical handicraft made from weeds used to keep stuff to the mouth-watering ‘pla taphian yai buab’ – silver barb cooked with Luffa or natural sponge. There are also other numerous popular and much sought after foods and sweets from the southern province of Trang.

They will be sold at special cheap prices during the event.

He also said the main aim of the event is the promotion of goods and services which include restaurants and small shops up to hotels and commercial flight operators.

This included assorted number of special packages being offered by the respective operators. Ideal tour or other packages can be shipped here while enjoying the abundance of foods and sweets being sold very cheap prices, he said.

Backpackers are recommended not to overlook the canal market as many tour operators have opened booths selling packaged tours at the unbelievable price of 70 Baht per person.

Special lucky draws have also been organized where participants are required to draw dinosaur eggs which the lucky winner will receive a special Thailand package tour at significantly discounted prices.

The TAT said this part of the campaign is clearly aimed at dispersing income to the communities in provinces and also to promote tourism in rural communities throughout the country.

I wonder if the government is paying for those tents? Is this market paying for itself?

Place is always empty.
