96-year-old Japanese man makes Guinness history as oldest college graduate

KYOTO: -- A 96-year-old man in Kagawa Prefecture, western Japan, has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest university graduate.


Shigemi Hirata received a bachelor of arts degree in March aged 96 years and 200 days from the Kyoto University of Art and Design, having taken 11 years to complete its ceramic arts course.

“Simply, I am happy. This could not have happened unless I were healthy,” said Hirata.
