Proliferation of new street lights on the Darkside.

Anyone noticed all the new street lights that have been erected at bottom end of Nern Plubwan? The road where the old Titty Twisters bar used to be, not only has been totally resealed, it also features an abundance of these fancy new street lights, on both sides of the road. I haven't been down there at night yet, but it must be lit up like a Xmas tree. The local council must have had several million baht to spend. When they do things, they don't do them by halves!

I was gonna post on this but you beat me to it ? And you're right, it's crazy bright at nite...I know because I live in a village along this street. The street surface before wasn't bad but there was inadequate light at nite that's for sure. Now it's daytime at nite...and this is a more or less straight road that goes on for about 2-3 kilometers (from NPW to Nong Kraborg).

The problem as i see it is that there are just too many frekin lamp posts...they spaced them only around 10-15 meters apart on BOTH sides of the road. I'd say they could easily spaced they out twice or even three times as far apart and still have plenty of light. The other problem i see is that with the nice new road surface and the bright illumination, it will temp drivers to race down this straight-away even faster than before (though it being dark never really stopped them before).

The roadworks and drainage upgrades in the Wat Suttawas area over the past year have been very extensive...must be some major development plans for the area. Maybe it's tied into the new bypass road being build out by the reservoir.

I couldn't believe how many posts there are, on both sides of the road, total overkill. It's like they had a surplus of funds to dispose of and just went crazy on lamp posts.

The more money wasted...oops, i mean spent, the bigger the skim ?

Another issue is the massive number of light-posts will probably cause many additional pole to motorcycle/car contacts ?

The bottom line on this work is that it is a good thing, overall. As OMG noted, this road (Patanakarn Rd) was very poorly lit prior to this project. I agree that it's always been a "speedway", and I plead guilty. This road runs parallel to Sukhumvit, and has no traffic lights from it's start at Nernplubwan to it's end at Nong Kraborg. It saves at least 10 minutes, and (endless aggravation!) over travelling west up Nernplubwan to Suk, then south on Suk to get to Lotus, Macro, or Thepprasit Rd.

However, it's not yet complete. The new thick reinforced concrete road, with new drainage, and the aforementioned lights, has only been completed to a point just west of the large temple (I don't know the name of this one) at the intersection with the road that passes The Bird Cage bar, and leads to Khao Talo. The remaining distance, going to Nong Kraborg, has the large concrete drain pipes along the sides, and will certainly be torn up for completion of the project soon.

I had always suspected that "someone of importance" in local government lives along this road; because, as OMG mentioned, it was always in good condition for a blacktop road prior to the redo. When there were holes in it, they always seemed to be repaired much faster than those in other roads in the area. Now it gets this "super makeover" which, when completed, will make it one of the best roads in the entire area. Somebody with influence must be affecting that.

It's not only this road that gets the new lights makeover, the road that turns left at the end of Nern Plubwan and runs up to SCC road has also got the new lights, and I don't believe they are done with the makeover yet. I won't be surprised to see them installed along SCC road as well.

You're correct, giddyup, both Siam CC Rd (east of the outdoor market to Nongprue Rd) and Nongprue Rd (that one that runs between Nernplubwan and Siam CC) are getting the same "makeover treatment" as Patanakarn Rd, with new drainage, concrete roads, and lights. And the east end of Nernplubwan was actually the first road to get this upgrade a few months ago. It's going to be a major upgrade for this entire east end when completed. Now, of course, as with any construction project, it's a PITA getting around here. There are detours and short dirt bypasses everywhere. But, having seen the results where the work is done makes it easy to take a "jai yen yen" attitude on the temporary disruption. Within 2-3 months, it should be much more attractive, and much safer and easier to drive in this area. ... Now if only we could ban motorbikes! :-)

To repeat for those unfamiliar with this area...this street goes on in a straight line for a couple kilometers! We on this street now have what must be the best illuminated street in all Pattaya ?

The lighting will allow street racers and spectators to enjoy their illegal sport...

Those looking for a place to dump the cheating gf they have just killed...will have to find someplace else now...

Drug transactions will have to move further out of the city...

All good, No?

Whether you like the design or not, this is part of a trend...

I have had condo in Ban Amphur for 10 years. There were few public works (Railroad road and Jomtien Second) that were worked on from 2006 until 2014. Now, a huge increase:

Huay Yai Road repaved

331 dual carriageway almost completed.

Highway 7 to Map Ta Put and spur to terminate near Ambassador.

Something good is going on as far as BKK central government is treating area from Pattaya to Sattahip.

it looks good now, my only concern is when the light bulbs start to go.....will they be replaced? How many lights on each pole will need to go before replacements, 1, 2 50?

I imagine half of the globes could go out and there's still be enough light.

Love the new lights on the Darkside it's like Christmas all year round.

Just hope they finish the drainage and resurfacing of my road Soi Siam Country Club sometime soon,

I live near SP2, it's driving me crazy, I should have bought myself a full blow motocrosser instead of a PCX.

I suspect all the road improvements and lights are part of a master plan to build more villages. I'm sure the owners of the land had some sway with the local govt to improve the roads before the build begins. This land is now worth considerably more with the improvements. We will see pattaya expand out this way now.

Considering the horror stories of how long it took to complete some new roads in town (Jomtien Second Road) I was a little suprised how quickly the work was done. This 2 kilo or so stretch of road, with newly installed drainage pipes and lighting, took only 3-4 months from start to finish (almost).

Also quite amazed how it all aligned correctly. That the tops of the sewer drains ended up flush with the new road surface over the length of the new road was quite a feat.

Yes, it's a real mess now in the area between the outdoor market and the traffic light at Nongprue Road. But jai yen yen, Lucan. At least the new road will be high quality reinforced cement; not the usual cheap blacktop that starts falling apart after a couple of months. As I said before, those of us living here on the east end should really be grateful for what is, overall, significant improvement in our roads. I, for one, am genuinely grateful for this, despite the temporary inconveniences on the roads in question.

Probably true, Inzman. And the ensuing increase in traffic will be a downside to all of this. But it's still an overall improvement, wouldn't you say? At least they have improved the infrastructure BEFORE adding dozens of new housing developments.

That's not in the area we've been discussing. But I agree that there are a few such "unauthorized local dumps" over here. I'd like to see the authorities take action to clean that up. Perhaps it will happen as they expand the areas being redone. Based upon what we're seeing now, there appears to be some reason for hope that it could happen.

Plus, with all this new nite time lighting all over the "Darkside," I think a new official T-V nickname for the area is required. Can we get a ruling on this Rim? ?

Lets keep the historic name Darkside please,

Your suggestion Brightside doesn't have the same mysterious ring about it.

Might attract the wrong people, you know "normal people"

Also how can I hide on on the Brightside. LL

Your right things are improving all the time and at quite a pace, they must have a lot of spare cash to spend,

Yes I'm grateful and I know the inconveniences are only temporary, just hope it doesn't get too over developed, I fear it seems to be going that way.

I've seen a lot of accidents along Soi Saim CC in the last couple of months that could have been avoided if a little Health and Safety had been applied (try not to laugh at this foreign concept).
