used car dealer or private seller in Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

What's the best? I asked some car dealers to allow us to check the car to a garage first which they agree for most and then to pay at the traffic department which they refused.

Given that the cars are not in their name but still on the original owner I'm a bit worry to pay them before to clear all paper at the traffic department.

Would it be safer to buy to a private seller? What would be the advantage of a shop?

I have found used car shops to be shady and over priced... try one 2 car dot com to purchase from a private individual and before you purchase have the seller meet you at a mechanics shop for an inspection.

Thanks Kurt, That's exactly my thought, they are shady and overpriced but we can't find a good website with private seller, we tried one2car but there is not much private seller.

Try taladrod.com for private sellers.

I'm not sure there is a huge advantage buying private instead of a tent. A private seller will still try to get as much as they can for a car. However, if you sell privately, you can get more for the car. If you sell a car to a tent it's very simple but they always low ball you and give minimum price. Then they mark it up.

It's best to buy a car with a known history or that has been thoroughly checked out by a mechanic. I don't trust tents in that regard.

Thanks DavisH, we found one car dealer ready to move to the traffic department but won't allow the car to go to the garage, however we can pay a mechanic to come with us and check the car at the shop. Would it be as good as to bring it to the garage?

I would think that you would get a much more thorough car exam by having the car at the mechanic's shop. Especially since he is likely to have lift or hoist that will allow him to get a good look at the undercarriage of the vehicle. Being able to check for welds or other anomalies would help ensure the car has, or has not, been modified or repaired do to an accident in addition to being able to check tie rods, struts, shocks, etc.

try kaidee.com for private sellers as the listings there are deleted after like 30 or 45 days..so majority of the listings are private sellers

You can also request to go to the dealer to check the cars maintenance history....it should give a good idea if the car is regularly maintained according to the service interval.
