Can I get married in Thailand (Thai marriage ) and also for UK marriage? ?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am new to this whole forum thing and not sure how to start a topic but I'll cut to the chase,

My Thai fiance and I wish to get married in Thailand....

First of all if I get married in Thailand is this recognised in the UK where I live?

Secondly, she is here on a visitors visa just now so the plan is to go to Thailand to get married then we can come back as a married couple but I understand there is other visas that have to be applied for for my fiance to come and live here permanently with me.

We plan to get married first in Thailand (Thai style wedding) to help with visas etc to come back to the UK but I know a lot of people come to Thailand to marry and it is still recognised in the UK as an official marriage. Basically I want to get married in Thailand also British type wedding so family and friends can come over for a ceremony. Do I need a British vicar or anything more?

Hope this makes at least 10% sense lol

Any other advice is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

The Thai style wedding has no legal standing, so will not help with a future visa.

You can marry officially in Thailand at their equivalent of a register office, but that needs some effort on your behalf regarding an Affirmation to Marry from the British Embassy, translations thereof and a visit to the MFA to get the documents certified.

To please your fiancee, you could do the Thai style wedding, then apply for a visa to the UK for the purpose of marriage and have the official wedding there.

I am afraid it looks like you have a lot if research to do !

Starting to look for some answers, but the last sentence sums it up.  We are heading back to Thailand to work on finalizing our USA fiancee Visa and getting married eventually in the 90 day requirement back in the states.  SO in this agonizing and torturous journeys both physically (locations) and mentally we are having a good time traveling but hate the bureaucracy and information and misinformation including OTHER VISAS too.  So we are probably going to do a Thai Style wedding in March as we have local Thailand and bordering country travels planned and booked.  Then figure on heading back to the USA to maintain the health insurance 6 month rule in the USA.  We are up against the approval of Dec 24th and that has stagnated it seems because of the travel.  So will check on that SOON........in BKK as we arrive on the 20th. Hope to make some phone calls or emails first, but that is TORTURE and like having teeth pulled?  So ANY FEEDBACK and information on effects and ramifications of Thai Style weddings - if no legal standing - then should not be an issue right?  We are working on a Prenuptial agreement too and that too is another both countries issue to be solved.  So wondering if posting here can be helpful or not??? Thought I would give it a try.  Like the site, but like many things on the net, can be a huge time drain too and there doesn't seem to be enough of that lately, while the converse is forget all the BS and just go have fun and see how long it all takes or if really necessary?  Not sure if this is the right place to post too........want to spend some time seeing Singapore before we fly out tomorrow night. Really like this city too.  Third visit for me and second for her.

Update leaving today for the village. Both of us still don't have proper visas. See Facebook and Facebook live for updates. Exiting the country for awhile before the 20th. Getting back to fun and travel. Stay tuned or not. Don't understand a lot and the learning curves and actual operations can be difficult. There's also a lot of beauty and fun. Who would have imagined. Peace love happiness and understanding.
