BMA renovates park in Ekkamai into public park

BANGKOK, 4 July 2016 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a project to renovate Saen Saeb bridges and develop the Watthanaphirom park in Ekkamai as a public park.

The project is in honor of His majesty the King’s 70th accession to the throne on 9 June 2016 and Her Majesty the Queen’s 7th cycle birthday anniversary on 12 August 2016.

Chief Advisor to the Bangkok Governor Wanlop Suwandee and Deputy Permanent Secretary for the BMA Ratchaneewan Atsawathitanan on Sunday presided over the opening ceremony of the project at the Watthanaphirom park in Thawiwatthana district, Bangkok. They also joined in activities to plant trees and paint the entrance gate of the park.

The BMA cooperates with public and private organizations to improve the areas surrounding the park and road surface. Electrical wires in front of the park will be tidied up.

Good news, can't have too many parks in a steaming hot city. Will it be closed at night by the way?

And the electric cables will be bundled? You can't hide them and they belong to thailand as rice, chili and soidogs.

Bangkoks largest park is also currently being constructed.

The Thai Tobacco Company is relocating out of town and the 430 rai (170 acres) is being converted to "forest park".

Larger than Lumpini Park.

A nice elevated footpath connects them so you can visit both parks and not face the traffic.

I used to do a lot of exercise in that park.

It was renovated about 10 years ago.

Two weeks ago, I decided to go for a run there. What a mess!

The footpath (running track) had completely subsided in many places and had disappeared into the Klong. The whole place was in shambles.

Thais never seem to maintain places.

Thais never seem to maintain places.

That's because maintenance doesn't make for headlines and photo opportunities where you can claim your love for King and country.

Bangkok is a great city, on many levels. But, it has one of the lowest amounts of parkland, per capita, of any major metropolis in the world. Shame on a succession of governments, that put profit over the well being of the people, for decades. And a complete lack of vision, when it came to city planning. Parks are what keep a city sane. What would London be without Hyde Park? What would New York be without Central Park? Kuala Lumpur has massive gardens, arboretums, and parkland. What does Bangkok have?

What does Bangkok have?

Nanna and as much bush land as you can handle...

Yes, there are a few. Chuvit Park near soi 10. There was a park space near the Emporium. It appears the local headman, or the mayor sold out, as it is now some sort of commercial Dinosaur Park. Also Lumpini Park is gorgeous, and large. It is the primary park in the Bangkok metro area. Further north, there is a bit of parkland near Chatuchak market. There are a few others, but nothing on a grand scale. It is an oversight, or evidence of greed run amok, on a massive scale. The lack of park space, museums, and cultural events and venues, in Bangkok, is what truly separates Bangkok from the other great cities of the world, and prevents Bangkok from being on those same lists.

Having said all that, I still consider Bangkok to be a great and amazing city. I love the place, and get there as often as I can.

Anyone know why Chuvit Park is closed? Has a sign up for 'renovation' but nothing appears to be happening.

Hope no dealings have gone on which means the land has suddenly changed hands, and will be sold to a developer, if not already.
