Irishman arrested after hurling F-bomb at Immigration cop

Irishman Brian Daniel Walsh (seated, center) has been arrested and scheduled for deportation for hurling an expletive at a female Immigration Division officer.

PATTAYA: -- There are a lot of ways to get your visa extended in Thailand, but hurling an expletive at an Immigration Division officer is not one of them, as an Irishman now facing deportation in Pattaya found out first-hand.

Brian Daniel Walsh, 37, was arrested for overstaying his 15-day visa by four days and told to leave the country within 24 hours after dropping an “F-bomb” on Pol. Capt. Maneeporn Boonlieng at the Chonburi Immigration Office in Jomtien Beach June 28.

Walsh, it seems, was incensed at having to pay 3,900 baht to legally remain in the kingdom after screwing up his own visa situation. He had just completed a “visa run” to the border to extend his stay in Thailand, but thought his new visa was for 30 days.

Apparently, he never looked at his passport – until it was too late – to discover that crossing over the border by land gets you only 15 days.

Maneeporn informed the unhappy Irishman that, even though he was now illegally in Thailand on an expired visa, she would let him extend it another 11 days for 1,900 baht. In addition, he’d have to pay the overstay fine of 500 baht a day.

Well Brian, wherever you go, there you are. But you're no longer here, thank heavens.

Maneeporn has always been pleasant and polite to me - I'm glad her colleagues didn't mess around with this loser.

There is a lesson for all of us........ check your entry stamp before leaving the immigration check point.

Oh, and another learning point....................... keep your mouth shut when you are in the wrong and/or dealing with Immigration.

Immigration did nothing wrong and I think it is appropriate in this situation to say "som nom naar"

Bit of a non story to be honest, the article ends with the words:

Outraged fellow officers swooped in and slapped on the cuffs. If he didn’t want to pay, they told him, he’d either have to leave within 24 hours or be forcibly deported.

Which is what they should be doing anyway when they encounter someone on overstay, right? In fact the option to pay within 24 hours shouldn't even be there.

Doesn't seem to me like the swearing is relevant here.

All the information is out there; no excuses.

  • Countries which get 30 days at Airport and 15 day stamp at land border: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Brunei, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Slovak, Slovenia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and UAE.
How much will I pay for overstaying?

That depends on the number of days you overstayed in Thailand. The minimum charge is 500 baht per day and the maximum is 20,000 baht if you overstayed for 40 or more days

No, it seems to be an honest mistake, sometimes you gotta pay, ... pay with a smile and be on your merry way. ... thumbsup.gif

I guess somewhere there's now a vacancy for a 'English teacher'?

Well we know where there are a few vacancies for brain cells after your comment.. you do realise that people also come to Thailand on holiday! And sometimes they extend their trips. Amazing I know.

C'mon, admit it- and cut the guy some slack.

Every one of us has had one of those days when "it" piles up on us and we end up regretting what we do next.

Too bad for him that he lost it in exactly the wrong place.

But it could have turned out worse. He could have spilled coffee on the taxi driver, or refused to get off the karaoke stage. At least he gets to go home.
