All the information is out there; no excuses.

  • Countries which get 30 days at Airport and 15 day stamp at land border: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Brunei, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Slovak, Slovenia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and UAE.
How much will I pay for overstaying?

That depends on the number of days you overstayed in Thailand. The minimum charge is 500 baht per day and the maximum is 20,000 baht if you overstayed for 40 or more days

how many days does the UK passport holder get at the land border crossing ,is it 15 days also as not mentioned.

Part of the mindset that helps bring on a Blow Up is trying to live here in a marginal income.. then 500 Baht a day fine becomes a big problem. I am not a high roller - living here on a modest pension... but I say to guys like this doing whatever low paying legal work to stay here and scrimping by on not enough or just barely enough Baht will put themselves in in dire straights when the unexpected happens. Then insult adds to injury and poof you're off to jail ... Advice - check your finances and do not push the limit of your personal surviverability ..

Done himself a favour. All they think about is money.and ripping off the farang.People forget. To a thai. These charges are very high.Ask a thai who earns less than a 1000 baht a week in a factory.A months wages for something so small.Yet,If a thai does something bad.500 baht fine.Thailand is expencive now.for normal working class farangs.People go there thinking its cheap. And to some places in the western world it is cheap.

Rofl , same happened to my brother from Sweden when he was in Serbia. He got attitude because he had to wait so long time, but the lady just called on some cop who escorted him out of the building and nicely told him to calm down and if he want to enter then he has to appologise to the lady. Many people think its like in their homecountry.

Well Brian, wherever you go, there you are. But you're no longer here, thank heavens.

Maneeporn has always been pleasant and polite to me - I'm glad her colleagues didn't mess around with this loser.

I would have hoped that he got a stay of 30 days in the monkey house first and then blacklist this LOOSER.

Loser.... Not looser lol

I guess somewhere there's now a vacancy for a 'English teacher'?

Well we know where there are a few vacancies for brain cells after your comment.. you do realise that people also come to Thailand on holiday! And sometimes they extend their trips. Amazing I know.

Okay, so now there is a vacancy at his cheap hotel

Bit of a non story to be honest, the article ends with the words:

Outraged fellow officers swooped in and slapped on the cuffs. If he didn’t want to pay, they told him, he’d either have to leave within 24 hours or be forcibly deported.

Which is what they should be doing anyway when they encounter someone on overstay, right? In fact the option to pay within 24 hours shouldn't even be there.

Doesn't seem to me like the swearing is relevant here.

Of course the swearing is relevant! One of the first things you learn here is that an Immigration Officer can decide at his/her own discretion whether to grant you a visa/extension etc.

So the LAST thing you want to be doing is swear at an Immigration Officer! As a previous poster said "Som nom na", and his experience should show others that shouting and swearing at someone in authority doesn't get the required result - and that applies worldwide - not just Thailand

Like they'd let him walk out of immigration without resolving the issue on a known overstay if he hadn't sworn...

He was arrested for overstay, not for 'swearing', which is why I state it's irrelevant. According to the wording of the what the arresting officers reputedly stated, the offer to pay remained on the table after the point he swore.

The accurate title would be 'Irishman arrested for overstay'.

I'm not claiming swearing was a clever thing to do, and suspect he could have been arrested on that basis, but he was not.

Had overstay, (quite long to be truthful), went to Bangkok and surrended myself to the Thai Immigration. I was polite and apologetic, they were polite and helpful.I was allowed to stay outside the monkey-house until departing to my own country. Of course I was deported, that is the law, but I was not blacklisted. Now I'm back on a legit Retirement-visa. My experience with the Immigration Officers in Bangkok was very positive! Treat people with the same respect that you want to be treated with. Especially here in Thailand it will benefit you as Thai people are very sensitive as to how we address them. Cursing and swearing will get you nowhere.. Well, it will get you home :D Been here now some 7.5 years, never had any problems with Police or other Thai authorities, behave yourself and all will be fine...

There is a lesson for all of us........ check your entry stamp before leaving the immigration check point.

Oh, and another learning point....................... keep your mouth shut when you are in the wrong and/or dealing with Immigration.

Immigration did nothing wrong and I think it is appropriate in this situation to say "som nom naar"

Lesson Number Two.

Never argue or swear at a man (or women) in a uniform.

It's only one extra vowel -- as in, "As the cops approached with the handcuffs, his vowels got looser and looser."

Yes, check your visa stamp to make sure there is no mistake...

But it was not a mistake, and no way will they issue him a 30 day Visa Exempt Stamp at the boarder.

Lucky he did not kick of at the boarder they may have refused him entry.rolleyes.gif

I'm not claiming swearing was a clever thing to do, and suspect he could have been arrested on that basis, but he was not.

"Irishman Brian Daniel Walsh (seated, center) has been arrested and scheduled for deportation for hurling an expletive at a female Immigration Division officer."

"Outraged fellow officers swooped in and slapped on the cuffs."

Were they outraged because he was on overstay? No, they were outraged because he swore at an Immigration Officer.

And as you say yourself, swearing was not a clever thing to do, and he could have been arrested on that basis (as well?) and I did not say that that was why he was arrested.

What I did say, and still stand by, is that the swearing was relevant. If he had paid the overstay fee and fine as requested, without swearing at the Immigration Officer he would NOT have been arrested.

I'm on a married 'visa'....my 90 day due date was 5 May but my 1 yr 'allowed to stay' in Thailand expired 4 April. I made an ass...umed.... out of myself for thinking that my new 1 yr extension to stay restarted my 90 'clock'...it didn't, don't know why or care.... when i checked into the Jomtien IMO they told me that i overstayed my 90 day check. INSTEAD of throwing the F bomb I payed 5K and am good to go...seems easy AND no problemscoffee1.gif
