Quite scary that they can just go into your home and check without a warrant or anything. That they want to check for people overstaying.. ok but a house to house search for substances is crazy.

makes me very scared in the light of stories of planting drugs etc by the police that I have heard

They can just invade your house for no reason without a warrant and then "find" a bag of heroin in your cupboard?

Same with your car

At least they don't follow the US version where the police shoots you first and THEN plant the evidence...

Such a silly statement. You have proof? Or just jumping on a bandwagon? Might happen but not a normal thing and in the US if that is found to be the case the cops go to jail. I don't normally get a hair up butt from these comments although saying it that way you would think it's happening daily. Edited by Mystified

Means nothing , just show them your passport in the door with the valid visa, lets hope they scare off some of the overstayers. If they could visit all the condo buildings here , they would get rid of some nasty people.

The real bad boys will have a valid visa and loads of money. coffee1.gif

Actually, the Thai Immigration must know exactly how many overstayers are here, how long they overstay and from where they come from. Implied, their databases are connected and up to date. I guess, many of the overstayers still living at the same address.

But, i also believe that their IT solutions doesn't works that way how it supposed to do, due lack of high skilled IT employees. If so, it's no wonder that criminals use this loopholes to hide in Thailand.

Sure, close your doors and windows!!

Give the police probable cause to search all of your personal belonging..

It should not matter, if the police search your residence..

Unless you're worried of being caught with child porn or have some other illegal things laying around?

What a silly post, Overstay visa to child porn.

What a nonsense coffee1.gif

i have a mate who lives there.

they turned up and visited only 1 block (and there are many), found a couple of overstayers , had the local press take some pics of the great job they were doing and left.

Another flavor of the month publicity deal. It succeeded as you and I are now reading about it. Social media however may put a very different spin on this.

In this case it involved farangs. Not the case in my wife's village, although farangs live there. Occupied, yes occupied twice now by the Army, every house searched this time, no warrants. No reason given 1st time. This time it was allegedly drugs.

And illegal, even in Thailand.

Yes. All sorts of things can happen. But that kind of always has been the case in Thailand. I fear it may be on the uprise. Times are tough. People are getting squeezed for money. Farangs are bigger and bigger targets.
Times are tough for BIB, they cannot extortion money from foreign bar owners when the military are watching, but extortion from bottom feeders condo owners are accepted.

I did not see any mention of money being extorted.

I saw it more as checking validity of visa status.

So it was simply playing to the media... 'what a great job we are doing'.... much like all the other crackdowns and raids... Just a media event, part of 'the publicity game'...

... of course, that won't detract from the paranoid comments of planting drugs and extortion...

... just another day...

The farangs at Nirun...surely you jest. It's likely they couldn't squeeze 40 baht for a plate of somtam out of that lot.

Under Thai Law, police have no right to come into your home unless they have a warrant or you let them in.Things might be different under current martial law though.

Passports can be checked at the door.

thai law means nothing unless you have a lot of time and money on your hands

Why Nirun? Why not Royal Cliff?

Coz Nirun is a condo complex for the lower end farang expat. It's not very nice an it's old, same as most of the tenants there, also Thai bar workers rent there. Units for sale there as low as 400,000b

Yes sir.......that is the scary part and most likely will not happen to most people...but for sure this being Thailand it could happen anywhere to anyone of us.

That being the case I surmise foreign nationals are going to have to be all the more prepared for something like that happening and try to counter it by way of some means and measures... and what exactly I do not know.

Have a lawyer or law firm available to you and know the law..or legal documentation always available to present tot the police to show them the laws concerning such actions on their part

Try to take cell phone videos or photos of the corrupted police...or hopefully have other people there as witnesses while also cell phone recording what they are doing and or have legal documents on hand to show them that you have the legal right to record everything and anything they do or say while INSIDE your residence

Talk to you condo or apartment owner and make it perfectly clear they can not just let the police enter their building and specifically your room without a warrant or something that keeps them from simply showing up and conducting a very intimidating and threatening police and or military exercise upon the building and the law abiding occupants....and do not take no for answer or the usual "My Ba Ly" Thai people attitude about such matter and if need be threaten to make it a legal issue with the condo owners if necessary concerning giving the police and military permission to conduct raids and witch hunts upon the residents and or owners of the condo units.

If anything set up a security camera system in all your rooms and record what they do and have it operating as a live feed to another device.

And ...what happens if you do not open the door when they come knocking as certainly when they did come knocking there must have been anywhere from 10 % to possible 30% of the occupants actually not at home...so the police did not have anyone to ask or demand documents from and be produced......so what if you did not open your door...making like you are not at home???

I doubt if there is a law that says you are absolutely required to open your door when the police come knocking....but I know well they would be pissed if you did not and that is when they may plant some drugs on you just to demonstrate who is in charge.

There has to be a means to counter these aggressive raids upon the residents living in the many condos.

Cheers

Getting like Nazi Germany, army doing door to door searches and checking foreigners' papers are in order.

Right at this very moment I don't have my passport. I have an agent do my annual retirement extensions and my passport is currently with Jomtien immigration. I expected it back on Friday but it wasn't finished so I guess I'll be getting it returned sometime on Monday.

Now if the army came knocking on my door this afternoon and demanded to see my passport, they'd no doubt take my explaination to be a cock & bull story and arrest me, and I'd he held at the lockup until Monday when immigration opens again.

So much for the land of smiles.

Cambodia & Laos Cheaper..Exodus! !!

Good bye close the door on your way out please.

I applaud the utter contempt of people on here. First to say good/scum/make it harder for the good guys/overstayers must be criminals, and the list goes on and on. Then this a raid as successful raid at that and suddenly it's what right have they to enter an apartment/drug planting/I won't open door, why not raid xyz. Hypocrisy at its best. Police come knocking at my door no problem, no arguments show then my paper work politely and on there way. Big drama NO doing there job YES. Keyboard warriors/bar stool tappers at there very best.
