Thai sex industry under fire from tourism minister, police

Thailand is not the world biggest brothel.
Measured by prostitutes per capita, the prostitution density in Germany is higher.
While it is doubtful who should be counted as a "prostitute" in Thailand.

Indeed. And while "brothels" are illegal in Thailand, prostitution isn't!

There seems  to be a  general confusion  about the definition of a prostitute. A prostitute  is  an individual  who  sells time  for sexual  activity on the basis of a  very limited  time and without any view to a longer term association other  than being a regular  customer  perhaps.

By contrast  are the significant  number  who feature  in certain tourist  locations  who may indeed prostitute themselves as a means of survival and  familial support whilst in search of a  long term relationship which be satisfactory to  All  concerned. Please  note  I  do  not  mention  " romance" .

I have  long been  amused  by the  existence of a  wonderful little  book  titled " The get Rich Quick  Book for  Bargirls ". Embassies  should insist it be  a handout with  any ticket  to Thailand !

However that does  not  retract  anything from the genuine motivation and  mindset  of those  who seek a relationship based  on the  mutual personal aspects. And such  does  happen very often  without  media  featuring.

Sadly  what happens  more often is that  some western social and as often financially long term devoid  reject happens  upon an optimistic Thai who s lead  to believe bs and is  sufficiently  attracted. The  result? Short  time  at  maximum  payout!

Overall  it should be contemplated  what has  made the situation that some  claim Thailand is  famous  for.

Many try to imply/ convince that it is a Thai  motivation.  Why  not instead  consider that  the  motivation stems  from   non  Thai  who  have quite  deliberately  created a situation  which a  small percentage of Thai  are willing to  take  advantage of.The  failure  of those  who with ignorant arrogant  condescension try to portray Thai as being totally at fault obviously have  never learned to  appreciate  "  Caveat Emptor ".

The  fact remains  that  Thailand is not in general a  destination specifically for the sex industry. Instead it is in specific  locations  where those who seek such specifically  choose  as a destination  but because of their wn  small  minds think it represents  Thailand!

Not once have I seen  any direct reference ( which  I  may have likely  missed) to  comparative  "Red  Light"  districts  in  any  western  destination !

This is clearly not true. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand, read the law if you not believe it. But as for many other things the law is not respected, because there are too many to take profit out of it (from police to tourism industry, from prostitutes to politicians). Thailand is a deeply conservative society, with lots of hypocrisy.

I suggest you read the law. Prostitution is regulated and aspects of it like running a brothel and soliciting are illegal, but paying for sex is not.

Everyone should know by now.  Even the sky falls, Thailand will not be affected.

It fell yesterday and Thailand became the sky hub over night.

To view this fallen sky the Thai price is free farangs 800b a night.

The sex industry is worldwide, and has been in existence for several thousand years. Where there’s demand, there will always be supply. However, whilst it can’t be eradicated, it can be controlled as regards regulation, proper care of its workers including medical care and protection against criminal infiltration. Controls, however, are certain to be only temporary.

Take the Netherlands, for example. Brothels are legal, and any found to be linked with organised crime are swiftly shut down. The De Wallen red light district is famed as a destination for international sex tourists. Sex workers pay tax on their earnings, and the government is working to weed out trafficking and drug use as well as helping women who want to leave the ‘profession’. Sadly, even the best official intentions there may be losing the battle against infiltration by Eastern European crime gangs involved with money laundering, drugs and trafficking.

Here in Thailand….hell will freeze over before a sensible approach is even suggested, never mind implemented. Whilst men still want a right to instant sex, the negatives will always follow.

Good luck to her, it's an industry riddled with crime, disease, drugs and despair. The country might start to be a decent place with less of it, although you cannot get rid of it completely, filth is best swept away as much as possible.

Thailand will NEVER be a 'decent' country - it is massively corrupt from the government and police etc down and home to the largest community of criminals, scam artists, con-men and other assorted low-life scum on the planet!

BS, there's not much difference between Thailand and Western countries really, it's only in the eyes of certain Farangs. Eg the sex industry (as measured by prostitutes per capita) is bigger in Germany than in Thailand.

Never gonna work. Relations between Thai men and women are mostly determined by  economical contracts.   I predict a LARGE uprising under the tens of millions of Thai men who avail themselves of these services. It's the same as telling a Frenchman he can't have a mistress or that a Dutchman can't have his cheese and eat it.

Sex and economy go hand in hand, not only in Thailand. Is there anyone who really believes that you get sex for nothing in the West?

I first came to Thailand in 1972 with The US Air Force at U-Tapao to help bomb Vietnam. I was 18 years old. The sex industry was for the money for the Thai people and the entertainment of the soldiers. The soldiers are gone. The sex industry is still here.

As bad as a lot of people don't want to hear it , the sex industry is as much a part of the Thai economy as Ladyboys are.

The sex industry is necessary for the economy in Thailand . The sex industry buys alcohol, sexy clothing, real estate, furniture, accessories, lighting, cosmetics, soap, skin care products.

The sex industry is here to stay, LEAVE IT ALONE.

Arrest the REAL CRIMINALS, the ones who are taking bribes and allowing others crimes to be committed. I am talking about the see-nothing and do-nothing police, military and politicians. Arrest the organized crime factions that are in Bangkok, Pattaya, and everywhere in Thailand.

Without the sex industry they would be 20 million more STARVING Thai people.

Did you ever hear of Sex Tourism ? Sex tourism is a big business in Thailand.

Some people should have their mouths duct-taped, example, Minister of Sports and Tourism

"Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and deeply conservative, but is home to an extensive sex industry,"

IMO, the first part of this sentence tells how fake Thais really are. The largest brothel in the world run by buddhists:)

I can't speak of South America but in Asia there is no bigger brothel as Thailand.

So where would those sextourists go then? Probably the Thai hookers will also go there.

I think you haven't been to Cebu City in the Philippines?

Thai girls are raised to be dumb; they get preggers in their teens, then without skills have to make a living and send money home to mom who's raising the kid. True education for all would be a start.
