A commune police officer was arrested on Saturday evening over allegations that he shot and killed a man after an argument earlier that day in Kratie province’s Prek Prasob district, according to the district police chief. Major Chan Sophalla, chief of Prek Prasob district police, said the suspect was Huon Hy, a 35-year-old male penal police officer working with the Chroy Banteay commune police. He added that the victim was 32-year-old Oum Sina, a known drug addict from Chroy Banteay commune’s Laiet village.

The district police chief said that before the shooting, at about 5pm on Saturday, Mr. Sina had been seen carrying a wooden stick as he walked in the village. He later used the stick to beat Mr. Hy, who had been exchanging money at a Wing transfer shop, causing him injury. Maj. Sophalla said that after being beaten, Mr. Hy called his police unit for back-up and three police officers shortly arrived at the scene to intervene.

“When police arrived at the scene and told him [Mr. Sina] to put down his stick, he did not obey orders. He then began attacking the police forces,” he said. “In order to stop him from attacking the police, first the police [Mr. Hy] fired one bullet into the air, but he [Mr. Sina] was not afraid and continued moving at the police. The police fired another bullet on the ground but he still wasn’t scared and moved forward to beat the officers. The police then fired another bullet into his chest, which caused him to die immediately at the scene,” he added.
