PATTAYA — If there’s a cop demanding bribes, and it don’t look good, who you gonna call?

For bar owner Paranisa Chaiyanapanichkul, it was Chakthip Chaijinda, commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, she rang for help when a police inspector reportedly tried to extort 20,000 baht from her, leading to his suspension Sunday.

Oops! - "Keystone Kops" in fake raid face the wrath of the commander of police

PATTAYA: -- Bent cops who raided a Pattaya karaoke shop trying to extort money made the biggest mistake of their careers.

The owner happened to know the police commander at headquarters and gave him a call. But when he phoned back the cop in charge of the fake raid refused to believe that it as actually him even making a joke of having the "commander" arrested for human trafficking.

This all happened on loudspeaker phone, reported Daily News.

As a bunch of karaoke staff and the owner were being bundled away in a pick-up another call came in direct to the cops own phone and finally the penny dropped. The cops all fled in panic.

Now five Division 2 policemen face charges of false imprisonment and extortion.

The hilarious story straight out of an episode of Keystone Kops started on Friday night when a plain clothes officer walked into the Nang Fa (Angel) karaoke shop on Pattaya 3 road.

He spoke to a serving girl telling her that if she was prepared to say that human trafficking was going on there he would give her 2,000 baht.

She refused so the officer tried his luck with the DJ who was putting on records - he put two thousand baht in her hand and repeated the offer. The DJ was confused about what was going on.

At this point four other officers burst in and they the girls were told they were under arrest. The two ringleaders were officers Narawut and Jatuphoom. The latter told the DJ to shut up but she called the owner Paranisa Chainapanitkun and told her to hurry over to the shop.

When she arrived Narawut said they were all under arrest for human trafficking and offering sex. But the owner refused to go and said the charges were ridiculous. And she had an ace up her sleeve - she personally knew the commander of police at headquarters in Bangkok Chakrathip Chaijinda. She called him and asked who were these cops.

The commander asked to speak to the head of the team of cops. Narawut refused to believe it was the commander and said "don't be stupid, don't waste my time". Even when the commander asked the owner of the karaoke to be put onto loudspeaker Narawut just laughed at the idea this was really the commander.

"Ha - if that is the commander call my boss at police HQ in Chonburi.

Ask to speak to Amphon Buarapporn!" All the cops were oblivious to the truth of who was actually on the line.

Narawut ordered everyone out of the shop . Owner Paranisa refused to go and Narawut raised his hand to slap her before she reminded him about the CCTV. He stopped. Handcuffs were produced and they were all bundled into a Chevrolet pick-up and told they were being taken in to Pattaya police station.

One cop called Moo (Pig) then suggested to all concerned that 20,000 - 30,000 baht could sort out this whole mess. At this point head of Chonburi police Amphon called to the owner's phone (The commander in Bangkok had contacted him in the meantime).

He asked to be put on loudspeaker. "Ha - that not my <deleted> boss" said Narawut.

Moo joked: "You know what we should do - put the commander and the chief on the charge sheet - get them drummed out of the police for human trafficking!" Everyone laughed and joked about the stupidity of the owner in trying to fool them in full earshot of the head of police.

Amporn then called into the private mobile phone of Narawut and his face turned pale as finally the penny dropped. Everyone was immediately let go and the cops fled the scene.

Paranisa immediately went to Pattaya police to lodge charges against the Division 2 police of false imprisonment and attempted extortion.

Commander Chakrathip has promised a full inquiry.

Great move....although for Paranisa to call Chakthip personally, she must have either been reasonably close to him, or had good connections.....but whatever, a great start, hopefully, people may see this example and start to stand up to the extortionist cops!!

A number of years ago I partnered in a bar with some Thai friends....

Prior to opening one of my friends visited the local Police Station, spoke with the head officer there, discussed quick response in emergencies etc and of course we paid a nominal amount for such 'additional' service.

A few weeks after opening 3 Police Officers turn up demanding money, threats to close us down etc... we name dropped and told them never to come back... we never saw them again.

In Thailand its the norm to give the BiB a 'fee' - after all, they are the ones who deal with the drunks & the problems associated with the bars. And when doing so, dealing with someone higher up the chain eradicates a few 'bottom feeders' chancing their luck.

Of course, this fee also comes with the benefit of receiving less hassle from the BiB than if it hadn't been offered...

What happened to the Prayut war on corruption, sorry it was only talk.

Didn't you read the report? It worked in this case so it was a little more than talk.

This has NOTHING to do with the so-called "war on corruption". This story only ended this way because of a very high connection. Nothing to do with equal justice for all...

It is a great story. One can only hope there will be a trial, and the cops will be convicted, and sentenced to prison, where they will be treated very kindly by the other inmates. Cop convictions are extremely rare here. Judges just do not have the courage, nor the moral conviction, and it appears that the government discourages the pursuit of these fools.

It's time for the Army to sort out all the police in Thailand, major cause of crime itself. When I see the Police, I see mostly corruption dressed in brown.

Nobody in power wants to reform the police. Impossible to get away with all the BS if they did! LOL

I'm sorry but you can't say all police are corrupt. I'm tired of listening to the whining from TV members about the BIB and tea money. There are good and bad cops, end of story.

I'd wager a guess they dont get pursued because the government is happy to keep paying them pittance..

hence they turn a blind eye to the polices 'extra income ' activities.

Exactly the point I have been trying to make for years now. In exchange for NOT investing a trillion baht or more annually, in equipment, forensics, overseas training (required for expert forensics, detective work, CSI, etc.) trucks, cars, proper motorbikes, weapons, ammunition, and proper salaries, they choose to turn a blind eye, allow utter and complete incompetency to be the law (or lack thereof) of the land, and tolerate a complete and utter lack of public safety, traffic safety, and law and order. That is quite a compromise. And it has been made by one administration after another, especially by the little man who is a law and order politician only in his imagination, and his dreams. And the same seems to apply to the entire judicial system, which is weak by any standards.

Well you're misinformed about the men in green. Up here in Nongkhai, the boys in green extort twice as much as the police.
