Roof Windows / Skylight - pitched roof

Anyone any success with these in Thailand?

I really need some more light in my pitched kitchen roof, due to a neighbour at the rear of my house building a wall, and blocking nearly all the natural light, to the rear of my property.

The company on Pattaya Klang that installed my regular PVC windows are scared to take on the task.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Most people in Thailand have cement tile roof and buy a clear PVC sheet to let light in.

Do you have a roof as shown in your photo? If not there may be real issues finding a window to install on what you have - and suspect even if same as photo there may not be any source in Thailand. But I am old time so maybe I am wrong.

Similar to rear roof in middle of photo. My roof also has Pu foam sprayed underneath so it will need to be removed in that area.

DMC1: If you roof does not leak consider yourself fortunate. The potential liability for a window company far exceeds what you would consider a fair price for a window. You can "buy trouble" and find a greedy company to take this job, but you should insist on seeing what they have already installed and speak in person to the home owner they use as a reference. There are so many nice lighting fixtures to give you light for a small fraction of the potential trouble you might have with a botched installation. I can not imagine the integrity of the PU foam is going to benefit from any sort of cut out. Not often I discourage home improvement projects but this like a disaster waiting to happen. Sun Paradise is the only firm I can think of that might have previous experience in such. A high end architect in Bangkok might know such a supplier. Be extra cautious on this project.

Velux is the company that provides roof windows like shelling peas; however when you go the website velux Thailand its content is conspicuous by its absence!

obviously there is no market for roof windows here; which to be fair are designed for western style roofs....timber rafter, double glazed and flashings for tiled roofs of less than 30 degs or more than 30degs...thats it.

i love them, fitted one in one of my rented as loft conversions are common in uk; just a days job for a diy-er.

Not a fan of the clear plastic stuff and of course you are limited with these according to your roof tile detail................

I suppose "solapipe" isnt here either; I take it you know this product.

One option if you have an unhindered gable wall would be to install a traditional window or if not, how about a row of glass blocks high level.

difficult to make suggestions without seeing your set up really.

how close exaclty is your neighbours wall to the boundary? and how close is your wall to the boundary, 2m either side is generally the rule but a wall higher than 2m is just bad manners!!!

Neighbours garden to the rear of my property but she's built the wall more like 2cm away not 2m as you can see! Not sure of the rules about this in Thailand.

If you can buy this type of roof light units here you can have them fitted no matter what roof covering you have, the company

who supplies them should have a roof fixer that will be able to install them for you.

@DMC1 - Where is the actual property line? Your wall shouldn't be less than 1.5-2m from it, if your place is built correctly then that wall is on your property.

Dunno if there available in Thailand it's a Danish company so don't see why not, maybe import or there's something similar made in Thailand.

Don't see as it impossible to make one, a bit of quality timber framing and some fabricated flashing's is all there made of.

The property line is just outside our kitchen window. The neighbours actual house is approx. 4-5m from my kitchen window. Previously the land in between was her side garden area/car port - it's a strange set up!

Yes, I spoke to 'upvc' on Pattaya Klang & they mentioned Velux and that they've done roof lights previously. He showed me some photos but stressed that the builder would have to be competent at installing the required steel frame in the roofing. Upvc installed the other pvc windows in my house a few years ago.

I think your property is in the wrong DMC1......as far as my understanding goes you can build on the property line if you do not have a door or window---if you do then I think you must be 1.5--or 2 meters from the line, from what you say, your property (windows are 2 cm from the property line)

What about a dome...... they have silver paper in the tube which enhance the light even more.......

Yeah OK but there are guys that do roofing for companies in Thailand and where you buy the Velux from they should be able to provide competent fixers to install these for you, it's not complicated they just need to complete a high standard of finish from an aesthetic point especially from an internal ceiling view.

I have had issues with my neighbour as I have built within 500mm of the boundary (the gutter on the eaves) and it was brought to the attention of the tessabaan.

the OPs property is clearly not playing by the rules however varied they may be, and I too, just to be awkward would build a wall up against your window.

it also works both ways, would you have liked your neighbour to come and stared through your kitchen window whilst still in his garden.

maybe its time for a nice new kitchen extension? plenty of advice on here to help you along

Every house in my soi rear walls are like this, since 20 years ago! I didn't extend my kitchen wall as I only moved into this particular property 8 years ago.

FYI, I get along fine with this neighbour & have no issues with them building the wall, only how I can get more light into the kitchen.
