The question: "it is unclear as to why the police are acting on this arrest warrant now."

is answered: "Naritsarawan won 7 million baht ($200,000) compensation in a malfeasance suit against the army"

The three great tenets of democracy. Freedom to vote. Juries in courts and Freedom of Speech. Where are they?

Juries in courts is a great tenet of democracy? My country (Netherlands) is without a doubt a true democracy. Yet it has no jury system.

I am happy it has not. I can't imagine being tried by amateur judges.

I consider the American jury system a mockery of justice.

This is a demonstration of one of the attacks. Fully informed juries are not in abundance and there is a reason for this. Don't forget with really competent lawyers and juries that are fully informed presided over by a skilled judge, it spreads the possiblitiy of democratic judgement over a larger field.

So if you accuse somebody of murder and they did it, does the constitute defamation? By that standard isn't every court that accuses a criminal quilty of this? Surely saying somebody is a rapist is going to be harmful to them? Next time I get arrested I am suing the Police for saying bad things about me

In most jurisdictions there's a requirement of public good as well. If the material is true but does not benefit the public then you can still be done for defamation. Not sure if this is the case in thailand though.

Your fellow Dutchman Hansnl says the complete opposite in another thread ;)

What a despicable lot of low morons now control Thailand , I wouldn't even mention the word Govern, this mob of dog S!!t have got to a low point in Thailand's History , one hopes that History will repeat itself as like in 1972 / 92, however one also hopes that the trade off this time to save face wont be forth coming, the Junta of Thailand is nothing more than disgusting mob rule, If I was a tourist I would ban Thailand from my bucket list , ........................................coffee1.gif

"kill the messenger if don't like the message" standard response here in Thailand.

I have served on American juries, both county and federal. All members of juries I was on took duty seriously and fairly.

aonangkrabi, are you American? Have you ever served on a jury?

This is from BBC (OK to quote?):

Pornpen Khongkachonkiet, Anchana Heemmina and Somchai Homlaor published a lengthy report in February based on accounts from 54 people who had allegedly been tortured while in military detention.

Amnesty International secretary general Salil Shetty said the charges made a mockery of the Thai government's pledge to introduce anti-torture legislation.

"It is a cruel paradox that they are harassing activists for exposing the abhorrent practice," he said in a statement.

Pornpen Khongkachonkiet serves as the chairperson of Amnesty International in Thailand.

Human Rights group should put more pressure on these unruly institutions. This type of big brother spying and punishment about defamation cannot be tolerated any longer in modern society,....

..... yeah, I know, just a pipe dream, in TiT.

I've never seen a military or government so fearful of literally everything. Little boys with guns and fragile egos is what they are.

I do hope this pics up international attention so it blows up in their faces once again.

If that is the form of torture the Thai Army dishes out to it's own kind then ordinary citizens.need to be very very concerned as to what might happen to them if they dare upset the military and it's masters.

Why do you think the ordinary Thai People acquiesce to Military Rule?

They know what they are like.

But don't confuse acquiescence with acceptance or agreement.

Rubbing salt into wounds - Sweet Mother of God these are some really nasty people.... All those tales of people being burnt alive in oil drums in the fields of Issan somehow don't seem so outlandish.

They were dropping students from helicopters over Phuket during Black May, so not a stretch.

The Thai military has had impunity for its actions ever since it came into existence. I see nothing changing soon.

If you read a bit of Thai history, published elsewhere, you'll soon discover this is a part of Thai culture.

A long standing practice by those who rule against the peasants who have no rights.

Cruel sadistic torture to intimidate and kerp them in their place

This is so F. wrong. Bloody defamation laws are most stupid in this country! Protecting the Army or Elites from individual teenagers. F. sakes!

Terrible story. But its just another story in the long list of injustices in Thailand. I have spent enough time in Thailand to know i could not live here. My Thai wife says she could not protect me in Thailand. Thus the home country is not so bad is it?

You will probably find that the majority of those in charge who seem to sanction this behaviour were only recently shaken out of a tree. They certainly are not thinking passionate humans.
